That's why I feel there is need to have some education on the annuity option.

The perception amongst the majority out there (I see this in comments on Quora and Reddit) is that taking the annuity could leave you in the cold once the company goes bankrupt.

The video or article could have a disclaimer that this is not legal or financial advice for such advice please contact your attorney or CPA or whatever

There is no private company. The State treasury of the state where the lottery jackpot prize was won buys the US government securities.

Financial companies go in and out of existence all the time. If every time that happened the people doing business with them lost their money, society would be broke. When a financial company goes bankrupt, it's obligations and assets are picked up by a different company. It's no big deal.

It's a moot point now as both MM PB are about the same again.

MM: $96M/$42.2M/$26.628

PB: $100M/$44.8/$28.266

So yes, something was off with the numbers I listed in the first post. The difference between the cash out after taxes for the two posted jackpots is now about the same as it was for $14M as it is for $4M.

The calculation of the annuity depends on interest rates. In the past 10 days there have been crazy swings in the interests rates, due to what is happening for tariffs and stock markets. Powerball ans Mega Millions annuity are computed based on interests on different days (because the draws occur in different days), and that is why you see a significant difference between one game and the other.

Once the markets will stabilize, you'll see the two games converge.

They are US government securities, so the state going bust does not invalidate the annuity payout. It's in the video.

If the US government goes bust you have much worse things to worry about than the annuity payout.

They don't over-inflate anything. It's an actual calculation based on the best interest rate they can get from a US government security. All of that is in the video. There is no conspiracy to show numbers that are not real. If you win the jackpot, you will get the exact annuity that was advertised. Sometimes even more, if they under-estimated the jackpot, as they often do.

I know, it's how much cash they have on hand vs how much you'd get if they invested the jackpot over 30 years (minus the first payout). It appears MM are over-inflating the annuity option by quite a margin.

Most jackpot winners opt to take the lump sum.

I think (if non exists) you should do an educational video on the annuity option. Possibly addressing concerns on the likelihood of a state going bust and not paying it all or any other eventuality.

Maybe with the right education, some winners may opt to go the annuity way

Cash option before (Federal) taxes:

PB: $39.6M

MM: $42.2M

Difference: $2.6M

So a difference in jackpots of $14M only gives a difference of $2.6M Cash option $1.638M cash out after taxes?? WTF
