My reason was just one of many reasons why someone might wait...

There is the whole social aspect of it when the jackpot gets large, etc.

You make a good point about people overspending on one drawing because the jackpot is large (even though the odds are the same)... That's great you're able to stick to buying one ticket per draw. You do have a valid point, but most of the time, this is what happens.

A player doesn't play until the jackpot is say $1B.

Let us assume it took 40 runs to get there. If I played $3 every draw that would be 40x$3=$120.

Now the player that was on the fence jumps in, like most of the times after 1B its a jackpot frenzy and so they are putting in say $50... [ More ]

I think we'd all be ecstatic to win $50 million ($11.5-$13.5 million after the lump sum and taxes)!

The problem: The odds.

Saying you don't buy tickets until it reaches $XXX is a way to limit the amount of money you spend on the game with horrible odds... I've never had a set dollar amount like that, but I understand why people do it.

Recently, I have decided to cut back on gambling, so I'm coming up ways to do that... Zero gambling this September was the start.

Friday nights upcoming MM draw will also be draw #15 which is at $244M/$103M Cash .

The MM started at $50M/21.5M Cash.....The PB started at $20M/$8.7M Cash

In our opinion, there's still something askew.

With an increase of $16 to $17 Million in the jackpot there should be a supporting Sales amount of $28.1 to $29.4 Million.

However, Sales has only been around $25.2 Million; a miss of about $2.9 to $4.2 Million.

I live in Washington and it's illegal to do online gambling. I believe sports betting is now available when you are physically on the land of tribal casinos, but I don't go to casinos and haven't ever gambled on sports.

Very good point! You can't win if you don't play. I stopped playing Mega Millions altogether after they raised the price to $5. I remember years ago when Mega Millions and Powerball raised the ticket price to $2. I actually play Powerball consistently (spending $20 three times a week) just because I am afraid that Powerball tickets will eventually be sold at $5 a ticket

Seems reasonable, jackpot annuity goes up because the jackpot cash increases; which is a result of sales going up.

Why are the cash value restarts varying ? The Annuity doesn't. I know it's an estimate. But to go from $23.1M down to $21.5M seems a bit of a jump. I could understand if it was around the holiday season. I would think that restart cash value would remain reasonably consistent. Yes, I am aware of previous restarts under the old system fluctuating. Just curious

4 months and a week to be hit on the 38th drawing. My worry is that close to 300K people would have access to a picture of the ticket, though not the full picture.

I wonder if some of them would head over to the lottery HQ and claim to be part of a pool that won and they have a picture to validate the claim.

So a slow climb to a billion is arguably the game working as designed, not underperforming.

Not really design, but I think MM was hoping that ticket sales wouldn't have dropped as much as they did. They're making more money on each drawing for a given jackpot, but it has now been over 18 months since their last jackpot over $1 billion. I can spend more, but Im now 72. A 2 Step win would be plenty for my remaining years. I do play TX Lotto, still only a buck for ticket. But the odds on that game is pretty bad. Not MM or PB bad, but....

2 Step would take care of me for the rest of my life along with a couple IRA's I have.

The 2x I can get for $3 on PB, but a 3x+ feels worth the $5 line is a real, rational threshold, and it's exactly the kind of thing the lottery's pricing team is betting you won't calculate but you did. Just look at the odds of any jackpot game is honestly the cleanest filter there is. Everything else is noise on top of a number that basically doesn't move. And your point about Tx2Step is the one people miss: the smaller state games have dramatically better odds for prizes that would still genuinely change a regular person's month. Back in the old days when I was making pretty good money, I spent hell bent for leather $$$ on several lottery games, MM included. Now, not so much. I'm on a strict budget, and the $5/ticket is not worth the odds of the game regardless of the jackpot. I even cut way back on PB also. At my age, just winning a few hundred thousand on the little Tx2Step would be quite fine.

Voted Very Little myself. The $5 price fundamentally changed the value math, and I don't think enough people have run the numbers on what you're actually getting for the extra $3.

The jackpot odds barely moved: the big prize went from 1 in 302,575,350 to 1 in 290,472,336 with the removal of one Mega Ball. That's about a 4% improvement. Statistically real, practically meaningless when you're that deep in the hundreds of millions. So you're not really paying $5 for better jackpot odds.

We've done a comparison between the last attempted Billion Dollar run and the current Jackpot run.

Seems this time around, the Jackpot is lagging below the last time it tried to make the Billion Dollars.

Might be 40+ Rollovers before it gets to a Billion.

It is something called a fact that the $5 version of Megamillions ran for 40 draws without producing a billion dollar (annuity) jackpot. It is also a fact that the pretax expectation value has never gone beyond 0.5, something Powerball, as well as the $2.00 MM did a number of times.

Normal businesses consolidate or have sales when business slows.

The dummies at MUSL did the opposite. They should have consolidated PB and MM and dropped the price to $1.

Unlike almost everything else in life, the price of a lottery ticket is not goods or services. You're buying a chance to win. A more expensive chance to win should equal a higher probability. Not with MM. 2.5 times the price for the same (approximately) chance of winning.
