To make the math easy, let's consider a game with one million tickets, of which one of them wins $1 million. All the others are losers.

If all the tickets were available for sale (let's say you're the first person to buy a ticket), the probability of winning with one ticket is obviously 1 in 1 million.

Yeah good point, it may be true that the roll that has the top prize may not be sent out yet. So I think not only buying from multiple locations but also buying throughout the game period as well could improve your chances of running into the winning scratch off ticket.

That's not correct. The probability of buying a winning scratch off ticket has nothing to do with how many different locations you visit. It is solely how many tickets you buy.

For PB, your state taxes will not go down if you buy it in a different state. Your taxes could go up. The only way to reduce your state tax bill is to move, and you have to move before you buy the ticket, not after you buy the ticket and win.

The way I see it for scratchers is the winning ticket or tickets with the jackpot are hiding in a roll somewhere. So the more variety of locations you hit the more likely you have been in proximity of the winning ticket therefore increasing your chances of running into it. (Versus just buying from the same store every time.) I make it a point when i travel to new cities to buy scratchers from their local places.

For Powerball, Mega Millions, and other draw games the only thing that matters is the numbers you have on the ticket, not where you buy it. The luck part comes into play when you choose the numbers to put on the tickets.
