I do not understand why some people have to tell their secrets or they will bust. We had a woman in our office who was taking an attorney job with a city and she went around telling ten or more people and swearing them to secrecy. Me as well and I barely knew her. It got back to management ASAP and she was called into HR about giving proper notice to our employer.

Just so dumb.

this reminds me of a story about a gambler who was trespassed from the casino for cheating at bingo. one time, this gambler had received money from a family member that was to be used for a haircut, but the gambled instead went and gambled at the casino with the money and lost all the money. the family member who had donated that haircut money was very mad. sometime later the gambler won $5000 gambling. the family member asked for their haircut money back.

It depends on where you win... in PA, they can pay out up to $2,500 (usually by check) at a retailer, you are responsible for the taxes on your own. They only jump in and take taxes on a win over $2,500... and on a big prize they do not take the full amount you will owe... for instance on a PB or MM jackpot, they will withold 24%, you may owe up to 37%. When I go after a prize, I multiply by 0.559 to see how much I would end up with after 37% federal and 3.08% flat state tax.

Most people understand that income is taxable and telling someone to see an attorney for a little win is reckless. The person who said this is an accident waiting to happen should he hit a big win.

I told just one person, a trusted family member who was always a trusted confidante who usually kept my secrets until she told the lottery secret she promised not to tell anyone else. My family is filled with grifters asking for money like you surmised which is why I didn't want anyone else to know besides the one family member I told.

I agree. Nonsense to see an attorney for a $5k win. And if you are an adult and pay taxes, you do not need an accountant to figure out taxes. 4th grade math. Check the tax brackets.

And the economy is not relevant here.

that first part is the first problem. those 2 sentences, even with the economy the jobs out there and everything else. What you should have done was maybe gone to a lawyer or tax accountant . then put away the money. Object is don't tell anyone and its i know nothing.

You won and you do what you want with it and now you're in situation. Lesson learned.

You cannot enforce a verbal secrecy agreement. Why did you tell anyone you won? Stand up for yourself and tell the grifters where to go. I assume you are an adult? Say the money is gone. You are out of luck here and it sounds like you know a bunch of grifters. Stop explaining your money. You made your bed here.

I recently won $5,000 in the Pick 4 game and gave a family member who was in dire need of $500 exactly $500 to help her out and I told her I won $5,000 in the lottery and told her not to tell anyone else about my lottery win.
