The jackpot size does really affect a lot.

A 1M win for me, I will be headed to the HQ the next day that they are open.

No need to open a HNWI account in a private bank.

But when talking about $300M cash value that's $189M after taxes. Now one is think about setting up a Trust and all that stuff.

Playing the lottery is not the fun part, planning how to structure everything after a win, is what's fun for me.

There is a small handful that never claim it because they either lost the ticket, threw it out because they didn't check it properly, or put it somewhere to check later and forgot they had it. Think glove box, car console, kitchen junk drawer etc.

The plan has been in place for decades, reviewed periodically to adjust to changing laws and tax rates. What has been so elusive is the opportunity to execute that plan. Several hundred million? Definitely under 2 months. That amount gives me control of my remaining time.

i didn't consider that the exact size of the jackpot might affect some people's timing. when i posted the topic i had in mind a cash value of about 200-300 million.

Failing to plan is planning to fail so goes the saying.

I have been planning for a jackpot win for the longest time. My plan is all set ready to execute.

The key driver for me is Uncle Sam, yes Taxes and a little bit of the jackpot amount.

If I win from September going forward and it's a huge amount, I would wait for the following year.

You pay taxes on the year when you claim and not when you win.

If it's a big amount 500M plus I would wait. By then the new jackpot would build up enough for the hoopla of your win to die down, allowing you to avoid a lot of publicity whenever you finally decide to claim it. However, if you wait until the last minute there will be more attention because the jackpot hasn't been claimed yet and everyone will be wondering who it is.

whenever people claim their jackpot right around the expiration date, i always wonder what they have going on in their lives that makes claiming their prize more complicated. divorce? children finishing the school year? getting everything set up to immediately go into hiding?
