I would make sure I actually won big money. Too many stories of people accidentally reading small winnings as large winnings such as accidentally reading $100.00 as $1,000 and acting like a big shark when they are really a guppy. I would take the ticket to my local lottery office and verify the actual amount.

There is a built in cool down period where they have to do background checks and collect revenue from participating states, that could take up to 12 weeks before you even have access to a single cent.

My most urgent step is immediately signing the ticket, because it is a bearer document. I have debated the LLC route, the trust route and other ways to keep being harmed by PA's absolute lack of responsible protection of claimants, so I have already decided to sign immediately. Very astute plan Toke....I would have to get a new cell with new #...Just to use for handling the lottery biz aspects( talking with my team of pros). Definitely a large amount of tasks/options ahead of you to address.. I might consider a new computer with new email, also for handling my upcoming tasks.

I'd have to give myself at least 2- 3 weeks to lose my demons and get the minimal personal issues addressed

If I won the jackpot, I d give myself at least 48 72 hours before making any major decision .

The first few hours would be about letting the adrenaline come down. A jackpot is psychologically enormous, and I wouldn't want my first decisions to be made while thinking, Holy snip , I'm rich!

After I calmed down, my very first practical action would be:

1. Secure the ticket

If it's a physical ticket, I'd photograph/scan it, put it somewhere extremely secure, and not tell anyone yet... [ More ]
