I know someone who won $100,000 in the lottery and they received a check for $65,000 net. So, it's a little less than one-third that is taken out in taxes.

If we misrepresented info on taxes, then I would agree. However, we link to thousands of external news stories a year, and it would be foolish to assume that I had editorial control of any of those articles, let alone be able to catch every error. This is an excerpt from the Sales Brisk for Mega Millions story posted today (6/16) by Jeffry Scott from the Atlanta Journal: It probably doesn't hurt that one of the last Big Game winners, first-time player and warehouse worker Erika Greene, was from the metro area. She took home -- after taxes -- $58 million. Not a bad retirement plan.With stories like this on the site, I can understand the confusion.

No, I never posted the after-tax amounts that you specified. We keep every news story we ever posted online in our Archives section - maybe you could find the story that said $331 million after taxes (it doesn't exist). I have the only site that give a breakdown of after-tax amounts state-by-state, and I have done a great deal to try to educate about after-tax amounts.-Todd

That number should of been before taxes. Each person got an annuitized $108,333,333 so half of that which would be the lump sum would be around $54 million. So no...they probably took home around $40 million.

Those oversized checks we saw them with for like $58 million and change, is that what the winners took home AFTER taxes or before taxes? The brisk story on the BigGameLottery.com homepage said that one of the winners took home that much money after taxes.
