I'm glad you see it that way now, because your original statement was: If the odds of picking the winning set of numbers is 1 in 1,000,000, then buying two tickets for a game with those odds DOES NOT give you 2 in 1,000,000. You did not say anything about DOUBLING your chances.-Todd

I was trying to correct the people who think buying a second ticket will increase their chances by cutting the odds in half .Going from 1:1,000,000 to 2:1,000,000 does not double your chances of 'picking the winner' on either ticket.Doubling your opportunity to have the winner is not the same as cutting the odds against you in half ie; one ticket = 1:1,000,000 two tickets=2:1,000,000so two tickets gives you 2 possibil... [ More ]

Not true. The overlapping numbers happen when you calculate all 1,000,000 possibilities. i.e., 1-2-3-4-5 is possibility #1, 1-2-3-4-6 is possibility #2, etc. If you buy both tickets you will have made your odds 2 in 1,000,000, even though 4 out of 5 numbers overlap.-Todd

The process for picking the numbers on the second ticket allow for some, or all, of the same numbers chosen for the first ticket. Therefore the number pool you are chosing from is the same for each ticket, therefore the odds of picking the one winning combination is the same. IF you pick the numbers yourself , AND exclude numbers chosen on the first ticket, THEN you have reduced the numbers available in the pool and have ever so slightly increased you chances. My original observation was based on... [ More ]

Not quite, since there is nothing stopping you from having all, or some, of the same numbers on both tickets. If you use the quick pick feature, and buy two tickets, it is possible to have the same number on each ticket so the odds are the same for each set of numbers. The only way to always cut the odds in half would be to lower the number of choices in the number pool.

Will, you're wrong. If you were talking about two seperate drawings, you'd be right, BUT in the same drawing your odds are (number of tickets purchased) / (total number of combinations), so instead of 1/135mil you'll have 2/135mil, and since the total # of combinations is a constant, therefore when your numerator increases, the sum(your odds) increases.

In response to statement #2, Certainty of randomness does not mean zero deviations except in infinity, which is never reached. While the lottery machines may not be totally random, it's random enough. To even began to predict the balls you would have to test just one machine, with one set of balls hundreds of thousands if not millions of times. The lottery programs are based on (false)mathimatics, not mechanical differences of the lottery machines.

Just to set the record straight on a few points mentioned in this thread:1. Buying the 2nd ticket DOES increase your odds to 2 in 1,000,000. The difference is miniscule, but mathematically, those are the odds.2. For all intents and purposes, the lottery drawings are random . However, the scientific fact is that the lottery machines are just that: machines. Mankind has NEVER produced any machine that is 100% random. To say that lottery balls have no memory is not the issue. Perhaps there is one
