From what I have read you can get part of it that day, and the rest in a couple of weeks. Knowing how I am I would have the first check spent before I received the rest.

That sounds about right (although it may depend on which lottery you played). As long as the when does _not_ mean 30 annual payments.

I just read a newspaper article that said it takes 2 weeks for lottery officials to verify the authenticity of the ticket. This was for powerball. Added: Well, you can't get it all at one time. The other states have to get it to the states that have the winners.
