Just because 75 million tickets were sold doesn't mean that they were all different. Many people pick birthdays, so there were probably a lot of duplications. A surprising number of people pick 1-2-3-4-5 +6. Even more pick 7,14,21,28,35 +42. Each terminal uses its own random number generator for quick picks, so I am sure there were many duplications from that. People using the same lottery software should have picked the same number sets.

In that article, it was stated of the 57.3 Million tickets sold 1,579,793 were winners. 57.3M divided by 1,579,793 equals 36.27. That's about what one would expect.RJOh

Sorry, I made a mistake 36 x 90,214,740 winning combinations would be 3,247,730,640 combinations solds which means they sold more than enough to cover all 120,526,770 combinations. Obvisouly they didn't sell the one that counted and I doubt if that will happen twice.RJOh

No I don't think they would of sold that many tickets. Not 120,000,000. Listen to my proposal. The Jackpot increased $65,000,000....the amount that was put into the prize pool would be about half of that which is about 33,000,000. They had about 24 million in prizes. So 33 + 24 million is 55. The lotteries take 50% so double that amount and you get about 110,000,000....well i guess your number was pretty close. But aren't there 120,000,000 combos in this game. So they probably sold almos... [ More ]

The Powerball website posted the numbers of winners in each prize level and there were 72 winners of $100,000. I added up the numbers of total winners which included my two small winnings and there were a total of 90,214,740. With odds of 1:36 of having a combination that wins something, probably over 120,000,000 combinations were sold. For Saturday drawing, I played 42 combinations that included all 42 bonus balls and matched 3 for $7 and a bonus ball for $3, now some of my associates want i... [ More ]

The news station I listen to said there were 67 who matched the first five numbers...perhaps 5 had the PowerPlay option. I think Powerball tickets will be bought as stocking stuffers. The PB record is ~295.7 million in July 1998; the August 2001 run fell just short.

If you think about it there were 72 people who matched the first five numbers and only missed the powerball. But there is only 42 powerballs. It would be cool to know how many of those combinations were left with the powerball and how many were doubles or triples etc. On the news release at powerball.com they didn't tell us how many tickets were sold:( $280,000,000 I don't know if it will roll any higher than that. People will make sure to get there tickets early this week since wednesday i... [ More ]
