Some players reduce those odds by buying more than one ticket. For example the guy in West Virginia that won the Powerball last Christmas bought 100 tickets and the guy in North Carolina that won Megamillions bought 60 tickets. Some people just don't like a level playing field, they will do anything to get an edge, even use software to pick their own numbers.RJOh

If anyone is that good at predicting numbers to worry about cash vs. annuity payouts, they could be playing the pick-3 in $1 increments for straights and never have to worry about annuities or Uncle Sam. Plus the odds are 135,000 times better in Pick-3 than Big Game M.M. stability of the annuity issuing company (chosen by the lottery) is something i have thought about on more than one occasion...as a matter of fact, stability of any brokerage firm or even savings bank would be of concern to me. I have often thought that one way to diversify the risk would be to place smaller amounts of Cash (yes cash) in several banks to protect oneself from one or more firms going under in the dvent of a market melt-down. Hypersonig:You have to worry about the possibility of your kids paying INHERITANCE TAXES if you die before you receive all the annuity payments. If you ever win, and seek financial, etc advice, they'll almost certainly tell you choose LUMP SUM, regardless of your prize. You also don't know what the future tax rates will be, etc.

Depends on the jackpot...anything less than 10 million, cash definitely...As far as Annuity, I'd take that for the powerball greater than 20 million...1. They buy Treasury Notes, any money left over after buying the annuity notes is given to the winner in the first payment.2. Willable, I have 3 kids3. John: The companies selling the annuities want to make money off of players' winnings. AFAIK no state profits directly from a player receiving annuity payments (vs a lump sum).

If a jackpot was 100 mil and the cash option was 50 mil and the winner chose annuity .would the states pay the full 50 mil for the annuity policy or a lesser amount based on the bids by the annuity companys.I thought I read some where that states put the annuities out for bid.In that case the states would pocket the change if the purchase price was less than 50 mil for the 100 mil policy

Ok, let's figure this out. Let's take the current Megamillions Jackpot. 12 million annuity, 7 million cash.Annuity is $461,538 a year for 25 years. The interest rate is about 4.5 percent. Crossing with an annuity table for inflation that gives us a $6,843,781 Present Value. So that's $7,000,000 now cash option, or $6,843,781(PV) after 25 years. Hmmmmmmm. Guess which one I would take. Even figuring in taxes there's not much of an advantage to an annuity. I don't see taxes going down in 25 years.... [ More ]

Todd: Some players' choice might depend on whether the choice has to be made when you PLAY, or after you WIN. Seems to me _almost_everybody_ choose lump sum when the choice is after you win, but less overwhemingly when you have to choose when you play. Also, remember that the Mass. 6/42 and 6/49 games are still ANNUITY-ONLY.
