If there were a lottery games Hall of SHAME , both the 6/42 and 6/49 would be in it, because all other US lottery jackpot games have a cash option.

Many residents of New Hampshire used to live in Mass. Rumor has it that they left because of high taxes. Actually, they were fleeing because of the Mass. Lottery's numerous annuity-only games.

Webmaster Todd says that his New Jersey Lottery is a good model for other states to follow. I agree.NY and Mass. should look at NJ (all three sell MM).

JYM, where in Mass. do you live?NO lottery player should ever be forced to receive lottery winnings in periodic payments (other than a lifetime prize.)At least Mass. allows MM winners to choose lump sum (I wonder how many times players have asked the Mass. Lottery why the 6/42 and 6/49 don't have a cash option).

Unfortunatly true, I guess I'll have to just make do with the way Mass. is paying me my winnings. (Annuity may good for retirement, but winning the lottery not - investments now could pay off better in the long run

JYM:All US big jackpot lottery games will continue to advertise the annuity value for the forseeable future, barring (unlikely) federal legislation requiring lotteries to automatically pay winners in lump sum.Mass. Mass. lottery should just give the cash option on all games numbers and instant. Should also give it all to you not 40% then taxed on the rest. they say win this amount but when you think about it by the time you get it 20yrs its not even worth say $1,000,000.00 if that is what is won.

I understand that Mass. has a very low advertising budget, if at all. The NY Lottery is very aggressive about advertising; however, I don't buy tickets on impulse.

TG:NY (my home) did the same thing with Quick Draw this year.Are you the one (you need to get on here more often!) whose subscription expires in February?Even if all three Mass. games (including MM) offered a cash option, there's too many jackpot games. The new director, IMO, should replace BOTH the 6/42 and 6/49 with, say, a 6/48 game with a CASH OPTION (duh...) and a $3 prize for matching 3/6, $125 for matching 4/6, and $4000 for matching 5/6. I live in Massachusetts and have a season ticketfor Megabucks. Whatever the reasoning 20 years ago,there's definitely no reason for denying winnersthe cash now, and they should change it. Somebody voted to keep the 6/42 ANNUITY-ONLY, but allow 6/49 winners to choose lump sum (instead of changing _both_ games.) I'd like the know the reasoning behind that idea.

Saturday's Mass. 6/42 was hit by one ticket. If the top prize was hit in any other (except Mass. 6/49) US jackpot game, the player could have chosen a lump-sum payment. (Mass. winners in Mega Millions DO have a cash option, however.) Due to the quirky rules, the 6/42 winner is REQUIRED to receive 20 annual payments of about $223,000 each, minus withholdings. These days, when somebody hits Powerball, Mega Millions, or some other US jackpot game, you almost expect the winner(s) to collect the jackpot prize in lump sum. However, (although Massachusetts DOES allow its Mega Millions winners to select the cash option) its Megabucks (6/42) and Mass Millions (6/49) winners still CANNOT collect their jackpot prize in lump sum.
