I'll try to play some sort of jackpot lottery every week. If the NY jackpot is $3M, I'll shift to MM because the minimum is $10M. I'll play NY Lotto over MM if NY Lotto's jackpot is greater. In the sense they are the same, I'll go with the NY Lotto since the odds of winning are higher.I don't usually look at the overall odss of winning anything (ie. $1, $2, or $3 prizes). I only look at the JACKPOT odds and the amount. That's whats important to me.

Jeeves:What I meant was that, from the debut of Mega Millions in May 2002 until late March, sales in NY were higher for Mega Millions than NY Lotto.I agree that the size of the jackpot is the most important factor in whether someone plays. As for the overall prize return, there are five prize levels in NY Lotto vs nine in Mega Millions. A 3/6 match in NY Lotto pays only $1; matching just the Mega Ball wins $2. The overall odds of winning are better in Mega Millions than in NY Lotto.

FYI: I'm a NYer. Cash, your assumption of NYers prefering MegaMillions over NY Lotto is simply wrong. To me, it's all about the jackpot amount and the odds. Right now, the NY Jackpot is at $45Million. Odds of winning on $1 bet is 1: 22.5Million. Jackpot for MM is $26M. Odds of winning on $1bet is 1: 135.1 Million. To me, if I'm on a lottery budget, the choice is a NO brainer. I'd play the NY Lotto. Higher jackpot with better pay.Now Cash, you mention the overall prize return in NY Lott... [ More ]

Here in NY, there is very little excitement. I think it would have to exceed $70m before people really take notice. NYers prefer Mega Millions (because of the better low-tier prizes) than Lotto 59.

Fifthteen years ago, a $45M jackpot would have had people from all-over coming to pick-up tickets. I will admit that inflation has deflated the value of a million dollars but $45M is still attractive to a lot of players.RJOh

Todd:That was the dilemma when I delivered Lottery New$ magazine, which folded in December 2001. Obviously, we needed big NY Lotto jackpots, since Mega Millions hadn't replaced Big Game yet (although we also had a NJ issue, so BG did help us somewhat.) However, the editoral comments increasingly complained about the 40% maximum prize return in NY Lotto. Lottery New$ may have been discontinued anyway, given 9-11, but, the terrible prize return in NY Lotto hurt us.We also had a Powerball Weekly ,... [ More ]

You are correct that the jackpot was $45 million on March 6, 2002, the last time it was this big. The interesting thing is if you look at the run-up to the $45 million jackpot. The previous jackpot was $35 million, and the jackpot before that was $27 million. Obviously, a lot of people were playing in order to make it jump like that. This time, the jackpot is jumping in increments of about $2 million per drawing (last drawing was $43 million), meaning that a lot fewer people are playing now.

Todd:NY Lotto hasn't been $45 million since 3/6/2002.Hopefully, after somebody finally wins it, NOBODY will play it anymore, forcing the NY state legislature to realize that a 40% prize return doesn't cut it anymore.

Hey, $45 mil is $45 mil, no matter how much is designated for the prize pool. I agree that NJ has a better lottery, but the NJ is $6 million, while NY is $45 million. Also, the NY jackpot takes a while to get up there, so it doesn't get this big except maybe once or twice a year. Time to play it

Todd:I wouldn't bother coming to NY just to play it. When you consider that 3/6 wins ONE DOLLAR, and that 4/6 occasionally is under $20, and 5/6 sometimes is under $1000 (even with 2 plays/$1) as the prize pool is _only_ 38-40% of sales, it's a BAD bet, despite the cash option...and we all know NY still requires the choice when we PLAY instead of after we win.Although both are popular, IMO the Mass. and NY lotteries are the worst-run. Connecticut (AFAIK is somewhat privatized) is a better exampl... [ More ]
