What to spend on lottery

I've heard once from somewhere that as a general rule of thumb, you should only spend .5% of your gross income on lotteries. Any thoughts? Do some of you stick to this rule? Just curious.I'm a full time student so this rule is very hard for me yet I love playing the lotteries.
