Hey gang:The Fed. will get about 35%. And depending on what state you live in and their State Tax, it could be a total of about 41% taken out of the total amount of your winnings after all is said and done.In this case, 33% of $100,000 is $67,000 and then the State Tax comes out of that.Chief

I read sometime back there was a move in some states to start taxing lottery ticket purchases. If that ever happens the taxes on $0 would be 3-6% of the cost of your losing tickets.RJOh

Whenever I estimate the actual value of a potential jackpot, I always use the highest tax rate, then if there's extra... great!not that I need to worry none, the tax on $0 is 0

I thought lotteries withhold 25% federal, and then based on how much income you have will determine if you owe more (possibly up to an additional 13%). For $100,000 PB win, I'd think they'd get $75,000 from the lottery.

update:Since my last post...yes, this evening, I just read an article in the local newspaper that someone from the area close to where I live recently drove to Madison to claim a $100,000 Powerball Win. The article stated that after taxes the person will collect about $67,000. This amount seems quite high. I suspect that more taxes will be owed later. We live in a rural area. smd173:A very simular situation happened to me years ago in the NY Lottery. I had my play cards filled out ready to play. Some of my friends deceided to throw a Birthday party for me that weekend, I got tied up with that, forgot to play my cards. Checked the Sunday Paper the next morning... I had all six of the #'s. No winner, and the pot was 18M.True story...

I picked should be...here's why:In 2000, I was playing Super 6 in PA and I picked my own numbers.I picked: 05-09-20-24-34-44The winning numbers were: 05-09-20-24-37-47If I had just picked 37 and 47 or if the balls 34 and 44 had come out I would have had $14 Million.Oh well, as VDude would say, you are either meant to win or you're not.
