I tabulate the total appearances for each number in each position, then apply a formula that takes into consideration not only how many times a number appears, but how balanced it is. A number that occurs 8 times in the first position, 6 times in the second position and 4 times in the third position would have a balance index of 5.78, or the equivalent of appearing 5.78 times in each position.
