I snagged the following information from http://www.esmerel.com/circle/numeracy/bellboy.html. I still don't like that problem - at all! Another Way of Looking At It...I could ask why you are adding amounts spent and amounts received. The men spent $27, the bellboy received $2. Let's look at the total amounts spent and received. The men initially spent $10 each, for a total of $30. The hotel received the $30, but only kept $25, returning the other $5, so the hotel received $25.

OpenMinded -The trick to this is to work it backwards and use totals. The three men paid a total of $30.00 for the room. When the refund of $5.00 was issued the price of the room for the men became a total of $25.00, which is $8.33 per. When the bellboy kept $2.00 the cost to the men was a total of $28.00, a cost of $9.33 per.The argument is intentionally confusing inasmuch as the $2.00 the bellboy kept is counted twice rather than the $3.00 the bellboy returned to the guests.gljohn

There is no glitch. This means each of the men paid $9.00 for the night. The statement above is an incorrect statement designed to lose the reader. They never paid 9.00 for the night. They paid the owner $25 bucks, bus boy kept the other 2. That's 27 bucks, then your adding in the bus boy's 2 again instead of the 3 they got back. A correct write-up would be, They paid $25 bucks to the owner, 2 to the bus boy and got 3 back. 25 + 2 + 3 =30. Sounds like what the democrats do when campaining.... [ More ]
