N.M. Lottery chief wants to scrap earmark for education
The head of the New Mexico Lottery says his organization could provide more money for students if the Legislature scrapped a requirement pledging 30 percent of ticket sales to college scholarships. David Barden, chief executive officer of the lottery, said eliminating the requirement would allow for larger cash prizes and higher-priced lottery tickets, such as a $20 model. In the long run, Barden said, that change would pay off with more money from the lottery going to the college scholarship

Details emerge about Alabama Gov.'s lottery vision
Governor Robert Bentley said money from a possible Alabama lottery would not fund education, but he's still optimistic voters will approve it. The Governor provided some details about his plans for this month's special session at a visit to local media outlet WBRC. He's hoping legislators will green light a November ballot initiative, giving Alabama voters another chance to approve a statewide lottery. A similar measure was voted down in 1999. Bentley admitted he was among those who voted aga

Online sales fuel increase in Michigan Lottery revenue
Since it began in Michigan last Thanksgiving, Internet lottery sales have mushroomed along with the number of players using their smartphones and personal computers to play. In November 2015, the State Lottery Bureau, without fanfare, moved into the Internet gaming market, making it easier for players to bet from home instead of driving to the nearest lottery store to place a wager. At the outset there were about 86,000 players who registered with the state for the Internet games. The n

NC Lottery tries persuading lawmakers to expand games
North Carolina could collect more money through the state-run lottery if it expanded the number of games offered, Lottery Director Alice Garland told lawmakers Thursday. But such a move would likely have to wait until next year and would have to get past a sizable cadre of conservatives deeply suspicious of any move to expand the games. If that's a source of revenue other legislators want to pursue, that's out there, Rep. Jason Saine, R-Lincoln, said after the meeting, adding quickly that le

Falling lottery sales pinch college scholarships
The ticket-buying frenzy that erupted over January's $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot wasn't enough to reverse a long-running trend: Proceeds from lottery games aren't keeping pace with the higher education costs they were supposed to pay. Now lawmakers in at least eight states have made or are considering making dramatic cuts to scholarship programs funded by lotteries. The programs, aimed at opening access to college by providing nearly free tuition, include one at the University of New Mexic

N.J. lawmaker proposes a lottery to pay off student loans
A New Jersey lawmaker says the state should try something novel to help people climb out of all that debt from their college days: set up a lottery in which the winning tickets pay off student loans. State Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester) on Monday introduced legislation (A4631) that would make New Jersey the first state in the country to establish a lottery in which the winnings would go exclusively to college debt. Any vehicle that could provide some relief it seems to me it
