Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels said today he won't make a renewed pitch in the upcoming legislative session for his proposal to privatize the Hoosier Lottery, saying lawmakers will be too busy considering property tax reforms.
During the last session, Daniels proposed leasing the lottery to a private operator and said one company was willing to pay $1 billion plus $200 million in annual payments for the 30-year lease.
The money it generated would have gone toward a life sciences fund and a

Lottery Post noted for raising awareness
More than a year has fallen off the calendar since someone last claimed a Hoosier Lotto jackpot, an unprecedented drought that's raising eyebrows in addition to fueling ticket sales and pushing tonight's grand prize to a record $53.5 million.

Some States Consider Leasing Their Lotteries
As chief operating officer of the California Department of Finance, Fred Klass gets pitches from Wall Street bankers as often as the rest of us might get cold calls from telemarketers or insurance agents. But when Kathleen Brown of Goldman Sachs came to his office earlier this year and suggested privatizing the state lottery, Mr. Klass listened closely.
It wasn't merely because Ms. Brown happened to be a former state treasurer as well as the daughter of one famous California governor and the

Indiana Lottery finds $13,000 mistake
Data entry error.
Winning Hoosier Lottery tickets totaling $12,935 may have been mistaken for non-winning tickets after two drawings this summer because of a data entry error, the lottery said Wednesday.
The mistake concerns ticket holders with 4 of 6 or 5 of 6 winning numbers in the Hoosier Lotto drawings of June 23 and Aug. 8. The error means that some of those tickets would have shown as non-winning entries when presented for redemption.
