How a gaming geek with a checkered past pulled off the biggest lottery scam in U.S. history
12-15-18-29-38-41. Eddie Tipton jotted down the numbers on a yellow sticky note as he sat at his desk in Urbandale more than a decade ago. Around him were more sticky notes filled with number sets that he carefully wrote down as they spun up on his computer screen. The numbers were generated by a cryptic two-line software code Tipton had planted in his employer's computer system at the Multi-State Lottery Association. The office building was virtually empty as Tipton ran test after test

More millennials than seniors losing money to scams
Forget the clich of the vulnerable senior citizen falling victim to scammers a larger share of young people reported that they lost money to fraud than older individuals did in 2017. Among consumers ages 20 to 29, 40% of those who made fraud complaints to the Federal Trade Commission lost money, compared with just 18% of those who were ages 70 and older, according to an annual report from the federal agency released Thursday. The report examined consumer complaints made to the FTC in 2017.

Gaming the lottery was this couple's retirement plan
Gerald Selbee broke the code of the American breakfast cereal industry because he was bored at work one day, because it was a fun mental challenge, because most things at his job were not fun and because he could because he happened to be the kind of person who saw puzzles all around him, puzzles that other people don't realize are puzzles: the little ciphers and patterns that float through the world and stick to the surfaces of everyday things. This was back in 1966, when Jerry, as he is kno

High-tech lottery company opens new $15M facility in Florida
On its face, an instant lottery card wouldn't seem an example of high tech. But the 22 layers of print, security and other features needed to produce a modern lottery card make it high tech indeed. So tech was one of the themes celebrated Tuesday at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new $15 million facility in Lakeland operated by the British-based International Game Technology (formerly known as Gtech). We aren't just tourism anymore. We aren't just agriculture. We're finally high tec

Lottery scammer rigged more drawings than first thought, records show
The computer program that a former lottery security official used to rig drawings worth millions of dollars in Iowa and other states was more expansive than investigators first discovered, court records filed last week show. Eddie Tipton, a former employee of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) in Clive, wrote the code to allow him to predict the randomly drawn numbers of multimillion-dollar jackpots in as many as 17 states and claim the cash prizes. The code remained active and und

Survey: Many investors would make questionable decisions after winning the lottery
The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are a slim 1 in 292,201,338; the Mega Millions is 1 in 302,575,350. But that doesn't stop people from dreaming about how they'd handle a big-ticket lottery win. Asked to allocate a multimillion-dollar lottery win, consumers said they would put roughly two-thirds into savings saving an average 52 percent of the prize for themselves and 16 percent for others, according to a new survey from TD Ameritrade provided exclusively to CNBC.com. Of the remaining

Cops bust long-running illegal Philly 'street lottery'
The locations were nondescript: unmarked buildings in impoverished Philadelphia neighborhoods, sometimes containing little more than a table, some folding chairs, and a coffee pot. But behind the unremarkable facades, prosecutors alleged Friday, was an extensive and intricate network of illegal street lotteries, 40 places where people could place small-change bets with the profits allegedly helping the ring's boss, Gary Creagh, buy luxury cars and lavish apartments from New York City to Las V

Lottery rigger warned officials about computerized drawing machines years ago
By Jason Clayworth The mastermind behind a national lottery scam says he warned officials about a glitch in computer-generated drawings 11 years ago, but nobody seemed too worried, his lawyer revealed in an exclusive interview. The same glitch involving identical numbers drawn consecutively or nearly consecutively occurred again in the past two weeks in Arizona, prompting state officials to offer players a refund. Eddie Tipton's new behind-bars revelation, paired with the duplicate numb

The USA's 'luckiest' lottery players may not be as lucky as they seem
On, Dec. 29, 2016, Clarance Jones did something that most Americans could scarcely imagine: He cashed-in 20 winning scratch-off tickets, collectively worth $21,000, one after the other. For the average lottery player, that would be the ultimate payday. For Jones, it was practically routine. In the past six years, the 79-year-old from Lynn, Mass., has won more than 7,300 lottery tickets, totaling $10.8 million. That establishes him, by far, as the luckiest lottery player in America. But
