The Iowa Lottery's security chief says it will likely take several...days of face-to-face meetings with a New York attorney and others to get all the questions answered about a winning Hot Lotto ticket.

NY lawyer in lottery mystery travels to Iowa this week
A New York attorney who signed a winning Lottery ticket turned in minutes before the deadline says he'll be in Iowa this week to explain the mysterious circumstances behind the jackpot.

The mystery began on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010. Time: 3:24 p.m. Scene: a QuikTrip, 4801 N.E. 14th St., near Interstate Highway 35/80 in Des Moines.

The winning ticket for a $16.5 million lottery jackpot was turned in Thursday less than two hours before it expired, the head of the Iowa Lottery said.
Lottery officials tried for months to urge the winner to come forward and claim the prize. Iowa Lottery Chief Executive Terry Rich said the reminders worked as we had hoped, and brought in the winner just in time.

Even if claimed, winner gets $2M less due to fallen interest rates
Time appears to be running out on somebody's multimillion-dollar lottery payday.
Terry Rich, chief operating officer of the Iowa Lottery, said Tuesday the one-month countdown has begun for a Hot Lotto ticket that matched the jackpot numbers in last year's Dec. 29 drawing. The winning ticket was purchased at a Des Moines convenience store and will expire this Dec. 29 if the prize isn't claimed by then, he said.

Waterloo, Iowa, retiree Wally Markham said he wasn't able to keep it secret for long in Smitty's bar on Sunday that he was the jackpot winner in Saturday's Hot Lotto drawing.
Markham, 65, who retired in 2001 after 36 years working at the Deere plant in Waterloo, said he confided to the bartender that he was in line to claim the $7.54 million grand prize. From then on in, it cost me a fortune.

Lottery sales are strong, but there are points of weakness

Minnesota shutdown boosts Iowa border lottery sales
Sales of Iowa Lottery tickets at retail stores along the Minnesota border are getting a boost from the Gopher State's government shutdown.
State offices in Minnesota have been closed since July 1 because Gov. Mark Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature have failed to reach agreement on a new state budget. The shutdown includes the sales of Minnesota Lottery tickets.
