Michigan to launch online lottery games late next year
Michigan will sell lottery tickets and offer games online in a year's time after two companies were chosen Monday to run an iLottery billed as a way to help fund public schools and keep the lottery relevant. The decision came five months after lottery officials indefinitely halted their plans because lawmakers rejected Gov. Rick Snyder's funding request to launch the online lottery. Legislators, however, did not prohibit the Lottery Bureau from spending existing money in its budget to offer I

Man accused of murder over lost lottery ticket
Bruce Butler, a General Motors retiree who played the lottery for 40 years, didn't gun down a Southfield liquor store employee because he was angry he'd left a winning ticket on the counter months earlier, his attorney says. If Butler had won a $1 million prize, he would have known better than to try to cash it at a liquor store, attorney Joe Niskar said in his opening statement Friday. But while Niskar contends police got the wrong man, prosecutors say they have evidence to prove Butler,

Performance pay is rare in government jobs. But the Michigan Lottery Bureau has paid 75 employees more than $300,000 in incentive pay in the past year. And, according to the state's Civil Service Commission, the group is alone among about 50,000 state employees in being eligible for performance bonuses. The program was initially set up for about 75 sales representatives who met quarterly goals for instant tickets and certain club games. It was expanded this year to include 16 more lottery

Online lottery plans criticized by some West Michigan lawmakers
Lounging on the couch at home playing Keno and buying lottery tickets on your iPhone or computer doesn't sit well with some West Michigan lawmakers. I know seniors right now whose Social Security doesn't last a month because they're buying lottery tickets at the local store. If they can do it from home, their checks will be gone in less than two weeks, said State Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge. A new game system called iLottery would begin offering online sales of single tickets and insta

Loopholes allow some Michigan lottery winners to stay on welfare
A Michigan agency has removed more than 500 lottery winners from certain welfare programs because of a new state law that cross-references winners with recipients of some types of aid. But the Department of Human Services says many more welfare cases could be ended if what it calls loopholes were closed, or if laws were altered or expanded. The Department of Human Services on Monday issued a report that covers findings from April through December 2012. It relates to a law signed last Ap
