A Nevada Lottery? The Line Forms in California
On a recent afternoon, lines of customers snaked to the door of the Primm Valley Lotto Store, a bustling hut just over the border in California. The parking lot was packed with cars sporting Nevada license plates. The hut, on a dead-end street paved for the sole purpose of crossing that border, holds two important distinctions. It is the lottery ticket vendor closest to Las Vegas, 45 miles to the northeast. And it sells more lottery tickets than any other vendor in California, according to th

Nevada Assembly passes lottery bill
Senate vote is next step The Nevada Assembly voted Wednesday for a lottery in the nation's No. 1 gambling state, despite arguments that it would compete with slot machines and other games of chance. The plan would have to be approved by lawmakers this year and again in 2011 and then go to a public vote.

Lottery supporters in Nevada try again
Advocates of a lottery in the nation's No. 1 gambling state have faced a long run of bad luck in getting Nevada legislators to back the idea but they're betting the time is right for one more attempt. Among the 200-odd bills and resolutions introduced by a Monday deadline was a measure to remove a prohibition against lotteries that's now part of the Nevada Constitution. Similar proposals have been rejected by the Legislature more than two dozen times since 1970, although in 1990 Nevadans d

Nevada Gov. opposes lottery bill
Gov. Jim Gibbons said Monday he opposes amending Nevada's Constitution to permit a state lottery. I respect recent efforts by some legislators to explore options for new revenue to the state; however, I do not believe it is a proper function of Nevada government to operate a lottery, nor do I think that the state should be in competition with its largest industry, said Gibbons in a prepared statement. The lottery amendment is in AJR5 introduced last week by Assemblyman Harry Mortenson, D

A lottery ticket run to the border
