Printing error causes new Pa. Lottery ticket coupons to be issued
Pennsylvania Lottery players who tried to use some of the lottery's coupons that arrived in the mail or in the newspaper in late April or earlier this month learned that they were about as good as a losing lottery ticket. That's because of a printing error in the coupons' bar code that makes them unreadable to retailers' lottery terminals, said Elizabeth Brassell, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Revenue, which oversees the lottery. New coupons are being reprinted and will start a

Pennsylvania Lottery to drive profits by boosting payouts
The state House on Tuesday approved a change to the Pennsylvania Lottery that the Corbett administration says will allow it to maximize profits for senior programs by meeting consumer demand for high-payout instant tickets. State law requires the lottery to dedicate no less than 27 percent of revenue from ticket sales to funding programs for seniors. But most of the lottery's sales growth is from scratch-off tickets, which return less money to the state than do terminal-based games such as th

Man threw away $1.25 million worth of lottery tickets
A Pennsylvania man mistakenly threw $1.25 million worth of winning lottery tickets in the trash. The guy, it goes without saying, was pretty upset. Wouldn't you be, said Wendy Hinton, who works at Zhou Grocery on South Queen Street in York. On March 13, 2013, she sold 25 Quinto tickets numbers 4-3-4-1-8 to one of her regular customers, a man who, at the time, lived a couple of blocks from the corner store. She remembered because he played the same numbers every day their significance,

Newest Pa. lottery scratch-off sports $30 pricetag
The Pennsylvania Lottery earlier this week launched its most expensive instant lottery ticket, a $30 scratch-off that offers a top prize of $3 million. The game, appropriately called Three Million, is already in place at many of the places that sell instant tickets. It is the state's third $20 or more instant prize game offered at 9,100 retailers statewide. So far, local lottery players have been slow to try the new game. I think $30 might be a little expensive for a scratch-off, said

Lottery expansion could still be a big winner for Penn. Gov.
Efforts by Gov. Tom Corbett's administration to privatize the management of the Pennsylvania Lottery is on the back burner, but the idea of expanding lottery games to include keno remains very much in the picture. Revenue Secretary Dan Meuser and top lottery officials testified last week before the Senate Finance Committee on how keno is part of a developing strategy to increase lottery revenue to meet growing demand for the senior citizen benefits it underwrites. The catalyst for action, as

Pennsylvania will not privatize lottery
Pennsylvania is scrapping a deal with a U.K.-based company to privatize management of the state's lottery system, Governor Tom Corbett said on Monday. The state struck a deal more than a year ago with Camelot Global Services LLC, a subsidiary of Britain's national lottery operator, Camelot Group PLC, to guarantee $34.6 billion in payments to the state over 20 years to manage the Pennsylvania lottery. But Corbett's administration repeatedly had to extend the contract after Pennsylvania Atto

Pennsylvania Senate may work privatization deal
But solution may not come until 2014 There is broad support among Senate Republicans to give the governor authority for a private company to manage the Pennsylvania Lottery and legalize electronic games such as keno to boost state revenue, the Senate majority leader said on Monday. But quick action in the Legislature appears unlikely, said Sen. Dominic Pileggi, R-Delaware County. He didn't rule out a vote on Tuesday but noted long odds against that happening. Many senators want further vet

Pa. lawmaker wants to give lottery winners right to remain anonymous
A Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, lawmaker unveiled legislation Friday that would allow lottery winners to keep their identities hidden from the public. State Rep. Ted Harhai, D-58, Monessen, said he believes the proposal would help lottery winners avoid the pitfalls that have plagued many past prize winners, from alleged murder attempts to thefts and scams. I think providing this option is necessary, Harhai said in a statement. In particular, multi-state lottery jackpots can reach int
