20 years later: Will a lottery vote come before the people of Alabama again?
Saturday will mark 20 years since the people of Alabama voted against allowing a lottery.
This is something that citizens have asked us for by their actions, said Sen. Linda Coleman-Madison (D- Birmingham). They're telling us if we can't get it here, we'll go someplace else to get it.
Coleman-Madison is among many legislators who say it's time to let the people vote again. The details of that lottery proposal haven't been as easy for legislators to agree on.

An Alabama lottery bill is defunct for the legislative session, a key lawmaker said Wednesday.
It's dead for this session. It won't be coming back this session, said Republican Rep. Steve Clouse, who was shepherding the bill in the House of Representatives.
The bill hit a politically fatal mix of conservative opposition to gambling and liberals' feuds over electronic gambling and how to use lottery revenue. Clouse said they do not have the 63 bipartisan votes needed to pass the measure in ...

Alabama Senate passes lottery bill
Without a vote to spare, a plan to let Alabama voters have their say on a state lottery for the first time in 20 years stayed alive today.
The Alabama Senate passed the bill by a vote of 21-12. Twenty-one was the minimum number for passage because the bill is a proposed constitutional amendment, requiring approval of three-fifths of the 35 senators.
The bill moves to the House, where it faces the same three-fifths requirement. If it wins final passage, it would go on the ballot for voters ...

The push for an Alabama lottery is now a competition.
Sen. Greg Albritton, R-Range, filed a lottery bill this week that would establish a state lottery and limit it to paper-based games a move that has drawn opposition in the past from senators who say it could give a major gambling entity in Alabama a unique advantage over others.
It's a simple lottery, Albritton said on Wednesday afternoon. It gives people the right to vote as to whether to have a lottery or not. Straight paper lottery. ...

Alabama State Sen. Jim McClendon of Springville announced this morning he is introducing legislation to set up an Alabama lottery.
The people of Alabama have convinced me, the people in my district, that they would like to be able to buy a lottery ticket without having to drive to another state, McClendon said. They'd like to be able to buy a lottery ticket just like folks in 45 states across our nation can do.
