Nine sentenced to federal prison in lottery scam
Nine people were sentenced Thursday to serve federal prison time and pay restitution for a bogus lottery scam that targeted elderly victims across the country, according to the U.S. Attorney for South Carolina Bill Nettles.
In the scam, the victims would be notified that they had won a lottery or sweepstakes, but needed to pay fees or taxes in advance to receive their winnings, according to federal officials.

It was a cold case that some said might never be solved: An elderly Detroit man, whose family said he'd won $20,000 in a lottery game, was found frozen rock-solid in a vacant house after going missing Dec. 20.

Missing 86-year-old Detroit lottery winner found dead
An 86-year-old Detroit man whose family said he disappeared a day after winning $20,000 in the lottery in December was found stabbed to death in a vacant house, authorities said on Wednesday.
Arthur Neal Jr. was found dead on Sunday afternoon in the 15000 block of Mansfield Street, said Officer Nicole Kirkwood, a Detroit police spokeswoman.
Neal was reported missing on Dec. 28 after disappearing Dec. 20 from his home in the 17200 block of Trinity Street.

California gas station manager allegedly kept winning lottery scratchers
The former manager of a San Bruno gas station has been charged with cheating people who purchased California lottery scratchers after he figured out a way to secretly check which tickets were winners.
He would then sell the losing tickets to gas station patrons.
Most people who bought the scratcher tickets probably never noticed something was odd, but one customer did notice her ticket had been tampered with.

Indiana store clerk in trouble for buying lottery ticket
Four months after buying a Hoosier Lottery scratch-off ticket that won him $900, a Winchester, Indiana, man's luck appears to have run out.
Authorities say Mickey L. Stone, 36, 501 E. Fourth St., violated state law by buying that winning ticket at the Winchester liquor store where he was employed.

Oklahoma City police arrested a man last week trying to cash in a forged lottery ticket.
According to the police report filed Friday June 19, 45-year-old Michael Allen Shaske of Tahlequah was hoping for a $20,000 payout by turning in an altered $3 scratch-off ticket and would not take 'no' for an answer from any of the clerks he went to that day.

Wife of $1M Powerball winner charged with promoting prostitution
The Rankin, Pennsylvania, police officer who bought a $1 million Powerball ticket is named in a police complaint against his wife, Jennifer Brown, who faces charges, including promoting prostitution through an Internet site called sixtynineentertainment.com.
