For Mega Millions winner, the moon's the limit

Mega Millions

If you win tonight's Mega Millions lottery — worth roughly $153 million if you select the cash option for the $250 million jackpot — you can buy 120 million liters of Coke at a local grocer.

If you'd like, you could top off with about 186 million gallons of unleaded — which would get you, say, about 12 miles down the road in your gargantuan SUV.

But why settle for small potatoes when you could buy the entire farm — maybe Idaho? Some of the things you could cover with your riches:

• Trip to moon, $100 million. A private firm is working with Russian space officials on the idea, which could launch in three or four years.

• Payroll for the Atlanta Braves, $86.5 million, including the $16 million earned by third baseman Chipper Jones. (Parking and box seats at Turner Field extra.)

• More than 2,000 jail beds in Cobb County, $150 million. Fewer bad guys on street to take the $3 million you'd have left.

• Rolls-Royce Phantom, $329,000, with a little left over for chauffeur, gas, insurance and full-size mansion.

• Nautor Swan 70 sailing yacht, $3.9 million.

• 191 million shares Delta Air Lines stock, $153 million (80 cents a share late Thursday).

I don't know who did the math for the article, but in Illinois I figure the cash jackpot at 51% or $127,000,000. Then when I subtract out federal (35%) and state taxes (3%) or a total of 38%, I end up with $79,050,000 in hand.  That won't buy 120 million liters of Coke at a local grocer here.

I'd have to give most of it away after taking care of my family. Scares the crap out of me to win a load like that - the things that money does to people. Got my numbers though, so I'll just have to deal with it when I win ;-)

There will definitely be a big party ! Party

If I win the $250Million, the very first thing I'll do tomorrow morning is get a much needed haircut. This would cost me $9.00 locally and I'd certainly tell the barber to keep the change from a ten $ bill.

Haha, 0-60 in 2.9 seconds?  I'd drive that car whenever I could!!

MPG figures are not available...but I couldn't imagine it'd be much better than 2 mpg, lol.

The newest pricing is around $1.45 million, so I'd have to put down a few more pennies.

If you won tonight you could afford the million dollar car and a million dollar home a couple of times over.  It would be definitely sweet!

Or- you could always get a few acres and put a double wide on it.

I remember that's what the first GA Lotto winner said at his press conference back in 1993 when he won a few million. He said he was "goin' to Alabama to look for a few acres and slap a doublewide on it".

A fancy two-storey mobile home, bass boat in the carport, three junk cars and a brand new hummer would just about cure all ills for anyone.  Anything beyond that and a person would begin to put on airs.

I checked the Official Mega Million website and it states (copied & pasted below), "Approximately 50% of every dollar wagered goes back to the players as prizes. Well that 50% figure is actually closer to 51%.  As a player, I would get 51% of a stated jackpot- the figure I used above.  At your site, you used the deflated 25% tax figure that states are required to withhold.  However, in the multi-million dollar range, one is in the maximum tax bracket which is 38%, therefore, one is going to have to pony up another 13% of their winnings over your 25% deduction. Actually, 51% of $250-million is $127,500,000 but my final amount of $79,050,000 is valid.
Sorry but Mega USA figures are not correct.  I stand by my figures.

JAG331

Total prize payout percentage is completely different than annuity-value.

You are completely off. When they say approx. 50% of every dollar wagered goes back to the players, they are talking about the amount of money (from the total sales) they assign to pay all the different prize levels including the jackpot. Only 31.8% of every sales dollar is assigned for the jackpot.

As far as the cash value goes, if the jackpot is $250 million like it is tonight the cash value is around $153 million (around 61% of annuity) not 51% of $250 million. (www.ohiolottery.com)

Also, the maximum tax bracket right now is 35% NOT 38% (http://taxes.yahoo.com/rates.html). You would also be liable for any state tax on the jackpot.

If you would have taken the time to read the "Important Notes" on the jackpot analysis page at USA Mega you would have see that USA Mega is correct.

you guys are stupid if you win that kind of money you can't just go out and spend like crazy don't buy a big house don't move don't buy a boat. If you do this you will be in way over your head and you could lose your money (it has hapend before) If i won a big ass jackpot like that well the first thing i would do is not tell anyone, then i would wait 2-3 weeks to claim it, and in the 2-3 weeks i wait to clain the money i would plan out what i want to do for the rest of my life and make sure everything is in order before any money is spend. Thats the way smart winners do it.

Why can't I win anything in Mega Millions?! For the umpteenth time in a row, no winners on my side. Hopefully my Pick-6 Lotto won't suffer the same fate.

By the way, there was a huge diaparency between numbers tonight, maybe another roll is in the works?

You appear to want to do nothing until you win, then start planning. Not a good concept in gambling, and not a good concept for in life. You should already be planning on what you would do when you win. Its called a dream for a reason.

Start thinking, now, about what you will do with the money; atleast the initial steps. Search the internet. Find a Law Firm. Find a Financial Group. Investigate stock, bonds, real estate. Start thinking about where you plan on having the state transfer your money. If you don't begin to think for yourself, and plan for your future before the future becomes your present, then you will be one of those who do loose everything!

Write out a document, listing your concerns, priorities, desires, contacts. List how you will go about contacting those on the list. Make a list of what your Will should look like when you're worth muilti-millions. Plan on a place to live, your current environment (work, home, etc.) will be useless; atleast for a year or two. A sister in another state, a cousin in another county, a best friend in another city, etc. I personally plan on a long trip, using satellite to communicate with my team.)  Make plans for security, for you and your immediately family members. Plan on access to cell phones not in your name (those in your name will be useless).

Most importantly, while things are calm, make a list of who you think you can trust, and why you feel that way (when you win, every one will love you).

Bottom line, eliminate as much emotion as possible now. You will be too excited and confused to think rationale when you win. If you have time to spend on the LP, you have time to plan your future.

Oh, by the way, when you literally call people stupid, and you know nothing about them, you are providing an insight into your own mentality.

Chewie

Wow $12 million for tuesdays draw...............who cares Oogle

Sheesh, only $12M. How would I survive. The biggest downside is that I would have to lay-off four or five chauffers, half a dozen maids, and cut down the kitchen staff to three cooks. Four of my houses would have to be put on the selling block. Life would be so hard!

Well, you all know I had the keys to that truck load of money!  Well someone hot wired that truck and stole it from me  LOL!  I did, however, have major concerns about how to handle all of that money.  I know nothing about investing.  I do invest in the Dollar General store and Wal-mart every payday LOL.  I think like Chewie.  PLAN NOW.  My attorney said we will cross that bridge when we get to it.  I want a plan, I need to know what to expect.  Is there any lottery sites designed for us "wishers" and "winners"?  Maybe one of us will win one day and we can tell the world "we started here".  Thanks Todd and you others for allowing me to vent.  but sometimes these four wall of this 2 bedroom trailer is gets to me!  Could be all these kids too.  Wait, who's kids are these?

When I win I will have Architect John Henry to create a luxury custom estate for me!

What happened to the guy who wanted to rebuild Detroit? Maybe even he knows it's the Big Easy (why does NO have that nickname?) that needs it the most.

Rebuilding New Orleans is another possibility, since they obviously need it more now.

The rest of the Gulf Coast needs help too.  The casinos on Mississippi's coast were all pretty much destroyed.  Don't forget St. Bernard Parish which is completely under water and some areas may never be inhabitable again thanks to a refinery leak.  Plaquemines parish is gone too.

Another thing that nees to be done is to upgrade the infrastructure here in Baton Rouge.  Many people from the New Orleans area came here and now we have more traffic and we couldn't handle the traffic we had before the migration of people in to Baton Rouge.  We need more cops now, more schools, more housing, and the list goes on.

On that note, it would be kind of cool if one of the many evacuees to Texas won a piece of it.  They really need help right now.  Alot of people need help right now and hopefully the person who wins it will put some of it to good use.

We don't have MegaMillions here in Louisiana, we just have Powerball, which is up to $92 million.  I'm in 2 pools at work right now for it, hopefully we'll get a piece of it.

They'll post the information on the NJ website Monday. They are pretty good about keeping every one informed. It is how I found the place where the last 2nd place ticket had been sold. Went there, it's very close to where I work, and bought tickets. Two months now. Haven't won a thing.

And to think, people got PAID to land on the moon in the late 60s and early 70s.

No thanks, I haven't been to California yet (but hope to next month).
