Jackpot hits record $340 million for Wednesday

The Powerball jackpot will be the most ever for the multi-state lottery game after no one won Saturday night.

The estimated $305 million jackpot Saturday went unclaimed, pushing the jackpot to an estimated $340 million for Wednesday's drawing.

It is the biggest jackpot in the game's history and eclipses the previous record high of $314.9 million won on Christmas Day 2002 by a West Virginia man.

Joe Hrdlicka, a spokesman for the Iowa Lottery, said lottery officials are anticipating a rush for ticket sales as the Wednesday drawing nears.

He said more than 60 percent of Powerball tickets are sold on the day of the drawing, creating long, last-minute lines.

"We encourage people to get them as early as possible to avoid any delays," he said.

In addition, online sales at Prime Ticket Service is expected to end possibly a day early due to sales volume.

Powerball is played in 27 states, including North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota, along with the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The jackpot has been growing since mid-August, and 20 drawings have passed without a jackpot being won.

In Saturday night's drawing, 21 lucky players from across the country matched all five white numbers without the red Powerball to win $200,000.

The cash option for Wednesday night's drawing will be an estimated $164.4 million.

Apparently New York doen't have PB...sitiing here in New Delhi I didn't know that till yesterday...which would be the closest place to buy from outside NY...sorry but I'm not very familiar with the geography of the area....

Yes, I do know PTS is there....

Did you guys watch the lunar eclipse............astrologically speaking, it is supposed to effect the various sun signs..someone's luck is going to change dramatically for the better.

Todd, this bit is for you and many of the others such as Chewie and Jack who are often posting msgs...its you guys who make this site a very interesting one. So, its not surprising the membership is increasing pretty rapidly.

catch up with you all later.Thumbs Up....

Every time the jackpot reaches an incomprehensible number, I start dreaming of the impossible, and how to get closer to it. I keep a shortcut to the links that list those things I would never have a possibility of achieving - without the B-I-G bucks:

Part of the fun is the what if..................... I think it is great that those who wish to can dream.....................  When I was younger I too would dream of what I might do with B.I.G Bucks................. Now I just would be happy to be able to have a modest home in a warmer climate and maybe a newer Vehicle............... Do I have any expectations? No not really.............. but I still play............... After all hope springs eternal................... Good Luck to all that play and dream

I don;t think that American Express issues out the black card anymore.

I don;t think that American Express issues out the black card anymore.

Bummer - just when I was about to became eligible. What's Martha using, VISA? I already have a VISA Check Card, I wonder how it works with a $165M cap on it.

Chewie

The web shows that the American Express Centurion is still in use, a review dated in Spetember comments on it: http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews56231.html

It if you look it up on the AmEx site, you will not find it as an option. It is by invitation only.

http://www.epinions.com/content_32931286660

How do you acquire a Centurion card? First, apply for an AMEX Platinum card, if you don't already have one. Then use it frequently, especially for any travel that you book and for any expensive purchases that you make. Above all, pay ALL your bills on time. Then be patient. Don't call them. They'll call you. Actually, you'll receive an invitation in the mail if you're lucky. The AMEX Centurion Card is by invitation only. Don't worry. If you're offered one, it means you CAN afford it.

With $165M plus, I can afford it - and I will ask for it. Betcha they offer one in a hurry! I don't see AmEx turning down a chance at a piece of the pie. A million dollar deposit should ensure my card being hand delivered that very day.

I hope the jackpot rolls over and breaks the North American jackpot record holder of 363 millions set by Mega Millions [formely The Big Game]. Lots of people are going to gamble with the largest jackpot in PB history.

I don't care if it rolls or not, although it would be nice. I just want to win it! =)

You realize that if it rolls on Wendsday that the pot will be 365 but still below the record thanks to Powerballs inflated annuity. The cash prize will be around 176 million which may only place it as the third largest unless it's more than 176.7 million. The only record Powerball seems intrested in is the largest second prize.

This week will probably be the week that it Will be hit...............imagine the lines ........... Personally I hope that it is hit by several players rather than just one....................... I like Power ball because of the PP option so I do play it more than MM at least those in Texas have a choice.

Nothing personal, but I don't want to share MY millions with a stranger. Never had the opportunity to give away millions of dollars, but instinct tells me it would not make my day!

I don't think I would mind sharing such a large pot at all.  I mean that's a lot of money and I certainly would find a way to spend it in whole or in part.  My brother is a truck driver and I've instructed him to purchase a ticket in every little remote town he passes through over the next few days.

Got my fingers crossed that we win!

nomoneybabe

Hi,

When the jackpot is such large ....I wish it will split to at least two person ( even it is me!).

One winner with the whole bag like this is "not wrong" but it's a pain for the rest ...I think!!Disapprove

Fortunately, the record is based on the annuity, not the cash, so it will indeed be the North American record if it rolls Wednesday.

Fortunately, the record is based on the annuity, not the cash, so it will indeed be the North American record if it rolls Wednesday.

It  takes a lump sum of money to buy the annuity, so despite any claims to the contrary the advertised annuity jackpot is based on the cash available for purchasing the annuity. There is no such thing as the "cash value" of the prize, and the only thing that's actually based on the annuity value is the advertising. The only record that's being broken is for the largest  advertised jackpot.  If the lotteries were a private enterprise they'd probably have been sued for misleading advertising a long time ago.

ryanm

How is that misleading advertising?  It is perfectly legal for lotteries to invest jackpot prizes just so they can pay out a higher jackpot than they could all by themselves.

I think it's respectful that they have a match 5 bonus pool - the Powerball folks just know when to say "enough is enough" - how much do lottery jackpot winners really need?

dvdiva's avatardvdiva

Personally I think Mega Millions has the better approach with no cap and a much higher cash prize. The only way you'll get the whole amount is to play in Canada or Europe where you get the money tax free and in cash. The only thing that the states that participate in PB or MM will care about though is sales and we'll have to wait until MM goes on a roll before anyone can compare who's right.

Al the talk about "no truth in advertising", etc., is a bunch of boloney.  You actually get the amount advertised if you choose annuity.  Anyone who thinks it's false advertising is just proving that they are sour grapes -- nothing else.

A line of 22 people (yes, I counted) outside my gas station tonight!  Probably another 5-10 inside.

It's Monday!  50 hours til the drawing!  All up and down US Route 1 inside Connecticut, lines of 10-15 people.  What will Wednesday bring?  I had a rough time trying to buy just my Cash 5 ticket, after I drove 6 miles away from the border!

Thanks Chewie for that fun site. When I win this week's Powerball I will have my new "homes" built by John Henry @ johnhenryarchitect.com   and while I wait I play on this virtual tour site http://www.homedebut.com/

My friends and I play a game with the home debut site. We each pick a state and then a number. The number is the home we get! You will understand once you get on this site. Have fun!

Yep it's been Powerball fever here and the stores have been busy. I would not want to be a cashier during these times.

NoCompLotto!

At least PB is still a TRUE drawing... I would hate to see what would happpen to the JP if it was computerized. This way we know someone, eventually, WILL hit it.

I bought my ticket early Sunday am just across the state line. There was no line at all yet. Big Smile

Chewie, I showed that site to Daisy, she want to live in Tennessee. No hurricanes, and no earthquakes(at least not every other week). I think we decided to live on either Signal Mtn. or Lookout Mtn. Did I mentions she also wants a brownstone in the Lincoln Park district of Chicago.

good luck to all who play wensday!

No lines for me - living in Maryland, I travel to Pennsylvania to buy my Powerball tickets.  To cut down on gas expense and travel time, I buy tickets for 8 draws at a time - that way I only travel about once a month.  Wednesday's drawing will be draw number 5 of my 8 draw ticket.  I think it will be won by one or more persons on this upcoming draw.  With it getting lots of news coverage now, a lot of the combinations will be covered.

Good luck to all.

I looked for Luxury Homes in Tenn. Couldn't find anything higher than $4M. Daisy will have to move or accept something cheaper than $65M. Maybe you could convince her that the mice are tastier in Calfornia? My dogs name is Chewie, and he thinks the female pups in California are better looking - he's a Bikini lover!

Chewie, Daisy wants to buy several houses on one block so that she can be close to the family. Daisy also prefers her mice from a can already dead, diced and with gravy. have you checked out this site

W-O-W ! Now I have another site to spent a week on!

Only problem is, I don't see me buying a house with the big win. I intend to travel forever. I can rest in a luxury hotel somewhere. Then back on that plane or helicopter. I don't see why I should be tied down to a house or condo that I have to maintain and pay a staff to clean. I can use the kids mansion as a gathering of the clan. Otherwise, travel. Why buy a car, just rent a limo wherever I land. No overhead, no insurance. Since all travel will be business related, it is a right-off. Good enough for Mrs Kerry, good enough for me!

destinedtowin

Chewie, I also intend to travel but after awhile I tend to get home sick. I don't want a home that is so big I rattle around in it seeing as how it is just me and my cat's. However I do want a place that is high security. I don't need those gold diggers around. I just went and bought my tickets for PB happy to report no lines however ther was a guy in there buying $500.00 worth I told him that his money would come in handy for me to buy a new computer, and food for my cats (they love t-bone)!

good luck with PB everyone!

The line was out to the street, down the sidewalk at 10:30 last night at my gas station!  60 people outside!  It's going to be ridiculous today all the way to the 9:45 cutoff.

I just went to the gas station about a mile from my home and they have one person doing nothing but lotto, and one person doing scratchoffs and the rest of the bussiness. It was HELL in there people are buying up tickets as fast as they print up.
