Some Oklahomans baffled by new Pick 3 lottery game

Oklahoma Lottery

A manager of a local convenience store shared his insight on the start-up of the state lottery's scratch-off games versus the Pick 3 game which started earlier this month:  People can't figure the Pick 3 out, he said.

The state has apparently figured that out. Scratch-offs are no-brainers but the Pick 3 requires you to either choose three numbers or let the computer pick them for you.

The Oklahoma Lottery Commission is hoping to remedy that problem with some paid advertising messages with a common theme in coming weeks. "It was designed to say to people, 'This is not that tough,'" Lottery Commission director Jim Scroggins told the Associated Press.

The numbers are drawn each evening on television. Some newspapers reprint the numbers the next day and they are available online. It has brought in a little over $700,000 in the first few weeks, about what Mr. Scroggins predicted based on other state start-ups.

Oklahoma joins the multi-state Powerball lottery Jan. 12. The first drawing is set for Jan. 14.

The number of lottery retailers also is up to nearly 1,800. It seems several waited to see the public response before agreeing to become part of the process.

The lottery commission also is hoping the seasonal games catch on.  The new games are:

  • Winter Wonderland
    • Ticket price: $2
    • Tickets printed: 3,000,000
    • Top prize: $5,000
    • Overall odds of winning any prize: 1 in 4.82
  • Holiday Treasures
    • Ticket price: $2
    • Tickets printed: 3,000,000
    • Top prize: $5,000
    • Overall odds of winning any prize: 1 in 4.82
  • Silver & Gold
    • Ticket price: $5
    • Tickets printed: 3,000,000
    • Top prize: $25,000
    • Overall odds of winning any prize: 1 in 3.17
  • Holiday Gift Tag
    • Ticket price: $1
    • Tickets printed: 4,080,000
    • Top prize: $500
    • Overall odds of winning any prize: 1 in 4.82

It might be tough to know how to play Pick 3 if you've never bought a computerized ticket. But it's not hard to learn.

Pick 3 really can't be that hard for most people to figure out can it? lol.

Drivedabizness

You'd be amazed how tough some consumers find it

Part of it is the old "horsetrack" parlance - what is a straight or a box or a combo?

Texas went to "same order" and "any order" and that seemd to help

Sounds like SGI did a bangup job of retailer training

Sherwin

And I bet a lot of players have been marking 50/50 (straight/box) and marking 50¢.  That could get ugly when your waiting in line to play and the machine keeps spitting the playslip out.

CASH Only

Sure Win:

OK doesn't have 50c tickets. The minimum is $1, so you would have to play $2 for a straight & box bet.

Unless they are real gamblers, a chance to win $50 playing a box/straight pick3 for $1 isn't attractive to the average potential lottery players if all they have ever read about is a chance to win millions of dollars by buying a $1 MM or PB ticket.  The pick3 players are not the casual players that just play when they hear about a big million dollars jackpot, they are the players that enjoy playing every day knowing the best a dollar can get is $500, it takes time to develop this type of following.

jan 14 would be pb's  19 draw if no one hits    that would make a nice draw        ga had a slow start with pick 3 it took me 5 years to under stand it

You are 100% correct "RJOH" People here feel jilted by the new lottery, they keep running these "hokie" ads on tv that people are laughing at. The people at lottery headquarters need to be more informative about what new games are coming and when they are coming...and how much you might win! Pick 3 players in general are a different breed than mega-powerball-lotto players I think?  I think $700,000 in pick 3 sales in 2 weeks ...seems to me alot, imagine when players are offered a chance at 6 figures or millions? With all of the Casino,s and now horsetracks with casino,s around here the lottery commission needs to seize the chance or the money and interest will go elsewhere. For me I will still make the trip to missouri and play there until things get better!

Need to spread the word about Lottery Post to the Oklahomans. Well teach em how to play. Win or loose.
You only need to match 3 numbers from 0 thru 9. Seems like it should not be that hard >LOL<

You should know that if your link was deleted (this happened in at least 2 other forums), you shouldn't try any "mind games" to get around it. You risk the wrath of (our good buddy) Todd and having yourself kicked off of here for good. The only links you need to be posting on the site are ones that jump around Lottery Post, not off of it.

Pick 3 doesn't seem that hard to understand... I knew what a 2-way bet was when I was 7 years old (only because my mom won big one day and she said it was straight & 2-way that she hit on).

Good grief ! What would the Oklahomans do if they had to play Powerball?

Raven,

NoCompLotto! is exactly right, and I suspend accounts when people repeatedly try to get around the word censor.

Besides, why anyone would direct someone to a web site that does not present the results as quickly as Lottery Post does is beyond me.  There are something like 6 or 7 different results views available here on Lottery Post, and if you're not using them there is really nothing more I can do for you.  But just because you don't want to use them, don't post your links here.  We don't do free advertising for other web sites.

My sincerest appologies, their was no malice intended, only the desire to help a fellow lottery player.

I've always found it odd that the people in charge of the various state lotteries seem to have the least amount of experience with the games. This group includes the legislators who draft the gaming laws as well as most senior lottery personnel, such as commissioners and even lottery directors. LosingJeff and I have spoken to three Indiana lawmakers, and we've written to several others, none of whom have ever played a single lottery game, save for the occasional scratch-off ticket. Our former lottery director, John Ross, didn't even believe in gambling, so he had never played, either.

The problem, as I see it, is that no minimum qualifications exist for these posts. To be elected as a legislator, you need only enough money to run an effective campaign. Being appointed to a cushy commissioner's job, on the other hand, is often just a matter of acquaintance.

They all keep busy exempting themselves from the laws they write to govern us, but they won't take the time needed to educate themselves on matters which affect the general constituency. The lottery is a players' game and, as such, must conform to certain preconceived or historical models. Changing the fundamentals to make the structure conform more closely to a corporate business model is contrary to the spirit of the games. Consequently, the act of trying to squeeze an extra dollar from the lottery for state coffers will result in the erosion of player confidence and an inevitable loss in sales.

Thank you for your understanding.

I've been reading various Forums, learning from what I've read and exploring Lottery Post as time permits.

I've viewed many of the features of Lottery Post, returning to the Results Section is on my list of Things-To-Do, which is an amazing collection of Lottery Tools.
