Pick 4 lottery player wins $500,000

Maryland Lottery

A Silver Spring, Maryland, man won $500,000 in Wednesday evening's Maryland Pick 4 drawing playing twenty tickets.

This is the second big win for him.  In 1997, he won $250,000 playing Pick 4.

"I told the Lottery official back then that I would be back and here I am," he said.

The winner also hit midday that same day for $3000. The office manager of a contracting company was home sick on Wednesday and called the store to put in his evening numbers.

The retailer told him he hit midday, so the lucky player decided to go down to the store to claim his winnings and put in his Pick 4 number, 4762. That night as he watched the drawing, he saw his numbers come out one by one.

"I couldn't believe what I was seeing," said the winner. "I could barely watch, as the final number popped up."

He has yet to tell his wife or son about the big win. "I have something very special planned for my wife, I'll tell her then," he grinned.

The winner, originally from Brooklyn, New York, said he plans to move to Florida next year. He said he will also invest and pay some bills.

The winning ticket was purchased at Bel Pre Beer and Wine located at 2251 Bel Pre Road in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Oh Four,

I thought this lucky man was you!!!!!

LOL

P.s.  You're quite right, Maryland Lottery officials must not know what the payout is for a $1.00 ticket.

Bradly_60's avatarBradly_60

He spent $100 on the same number.  That is kinda step but I guess well worth it hey.

I have been trying to do the same thing myself but with only $10.  And I am playing it two way.  That will be over $26,000 if it comes up straigh and  $2400 if it comes up box.  Hopefully my numbers will come up like his did soon. haha

It looks like he played $5.00 on each ticket and won $25,000.00 for each one, nice call.

Well ok he did play 20 tickets...sorry just read that...but anyway he must of played it $5 straight on each ticket.  Can you do that in Maryland?

Should have asked for 100 $1 tickets. Then maybe there would not have been any withholdings.

I wish Green laugh

I should be so lucky if my p4 loser number comes out i'll get 25 g's. I kills me that some people have that kind of luck. Once in a while when my pick looks like it might come in i'll put 10 or 20 on it. Got it boxed a lot of times but it has never hit straight. I wonder if this guy is a poster maybe he'll let us in on his method. I cant zero in on a pick 4 straight to save my butt.

CashOnly no way to avoid the taxes on his win anything over 600 bucks is taxed.

dvdiva's avatardvdiva

$100 straight on a pick 4 seems really risky. I doubt this is the first time this person played that way. Hopefully he won't keep it up as a daily habit to try to repeat his winning.

DrumSlinger

I watched a whale in Tunica at the Grand one night in 1998, the pit boss brought him a tray worth $250,000.00 and he was at a table by himself playing $17,500 a shot on Roulete, after losing 4 spins in a row he lost $70,000, then he hit the red 25 twice in a row and walked out with $1,242,500.00, I guess ya just have to pick a set of numbers and stick with em, never play if you can't afford to lose.  Gut hunches are good if you don't lie to yourself, if you do you can never trust yourself!.

LckyLary

It didn't say how he chose the numbers, if he used any algorithms or just favorite numbers. REMEBER, HE WON MIDDAY AND ALSO ANOTHER TIME BEFORE. For every person that wins big like that there are thousands more who spend $100/day and only win back a fraction of it over a long time. With algorithms you have a better shot. The "20 tickets" must have each had the number several times on it. I often see discarded tickets like that, the same # several tickets. Usually done to avoid paying tax if it comes out boxed. One time I played a # for 1.00 STR and asked if I really meant to do that. Also unfortunately in nj if someone played that many on a Pick 4 and it came out the per-ticket payout would be minuscule because it's pari-mutuel instead of fixed like MD, PA, NY.

There are some players that will play only one number for a large amount every drawing straight until it hits. Right now in Delaware someone is playing for the night draw only about $70 straight on 1947. Being a small state , they have a low cutoff of $350,000. Every night this number is cutoff, so I know that it is almost certainly one person that is doing it, though there are bound to be a few others that play that number also. This person just buys up all that he can around 5:30 every night. I assume that he must play a few dollars for the day draw to perhaps just get the money he's spending back in case it comes out during the day.  I don't care for straight 4 digit play myself  because of the taxes. I prefer to find a number to play boxed and play multiple tickets. I got lucky last week hitting 1195 for 6 one dollar boxed tickets for $2496 and two days later hitting 5859 for 4 one dollar boxed tickets for $1664.  No taxes to pay there.

Regg555

Since he hit $3,000 on Midday the same day, it is obvious $100.00 was not alot to gamble to him.

As a "Marylander"...and resident of Montgmery County,  I say Congrats to Him!!!!!!!!

I know where he purchased his tickets, as I know his area like the items in my Medicine Cabinet. What better news than to read that 'my neighbor' just won big$$$$$$$$. I am inspired. I travel and walk all over the Bel Pre Neighborhoods, and shop in those Malls and Stores, and I am very happy for him. It's great to see a fellow county resident win. Even if he had to migrate to MD from NY to do it..............

I think it said he had 20 tickets. Here in WI, you can enter 5 possible plays on one ticket ($5.00 per ticket max). Therefore, he could have twenty tickets, with the same combo on them 100 times total. Cost, yeah; $100.00  But it comes out.

Should have asked for 100 $1 tickets. Then maybe there would not have been any withholdings.

If it's similar to WI, a P4 straight for $1 gets you $5,000. And anything in the way of a prize that excedes $599 requires you to go to the Lottery Office to collect; no retailer will cash it.  Therefore, even one straight P4 ticket cannot escape having taxes deducted from it.

A win of exactly $5000 is NOT subject to federal withholding. A few states do withhold at $600.

Well WI is one of those states. They withold 30% Fed and (I think 7% state) from anything over $599.00 according to their explanation.

I had asked what system he might have used. I am going to research that. Maybe he used tntea's VTRACs or based it on whatever came out the 2nd Sunday in Februrary in Kentucky. A bigger question is: does he usually spend $100/drawing? Or was he really sure about that number on that drawing? I'm assuming that was the only number he called in.

YOU ARE SAVVY...I wish I could analyze and compute mumerically as you do.  Then maybe I would play MM & Powerball among other gmes more often.  I love to watch others play, and get inspiration from them, but some of you are very serious players....

In my last job, I was a member of an office pool which was fun, because the SAVVY ONES like yourself handled everything, even the football pool.  I loved it.  All I had to do was shell out $5.00, and presto. done deal.  Sometimes we won some money, and believe me I get happy even wininng 20-25 dollars....really...I am one of those people, who prefers to let you 'Mathematicians' handle it all, and then I collect w/a big Hyper

We've had this discussion before, but for you "newbies", I'll reiterate:

Winnings of $600-$5000 ARE NOT subject to withholding when you go to claim your prize, however, some states still do it. If you win $5000 on a single ticket, you should be asked whether or not you want taxes taken out, as you have that option. The same applies for anything over $600. They should ask you whether or not you want taxes taken out - they SHOULD NOT do it automatically. If you have 20 tickets at $5/piece winning $25,000 each, then since all plays on that ticket are combined into a "single play", the ENTIRE PRIZE on that ticket IS SUBJECT TO WITHHOLDING at a mandatory 25% level (in this case, ALL 20 TICKETS are subject to withholding). I'm not sure though if the states that impose taxes on winnings take out state taxes. I don't see why they wouldn't.

Hope this clears the air.

When I claimed the Pick 5 the check that came FROM THE LOTTERY HQ was 28% or thereabouts less than the amount shown on FILE CLAIM. Even if there's not withholding you'd get stuck with it the next April because it's income; they still send a tax form. Anything with FILE CLAIM means the taxes come out automatically before you even get a check! Any STR wins on Pick-4 (even just one) usually fall into that category.

Maryland tax rules.

For prize payments over $5,000 taxes will be withheld as follows:
25.0% Federal Tax
7.5% State tax (Maryland residents)
5.0% State Tax (non-Maryland residents)

Mike if you itemized deductions your tax man should have told you you could collect some of your lottery tax money back buy producing x amount of losing lottery tickets. I know you can do that in Maryland.

HAPPY FRIDAY.....TO ALL THE LP MEMBERS...4/21/2006

I must say, I've enjoyed reading all the postings regarding the issue on tax withdrawals from the Prize winnings because I didn't know how the processed worked, and it's certainly important to me, as well. Most of you are Mathmatically Savvy and Tax Savvy. I'm taking notes.
