People who have to travel to other states to play Powerball or Mega Millions will probably go less often, but play more extended play tickets, so the money spent on lotto will probably be the same.

Did you just read my other post on the MM thread? I said that I had to cut down on lottery tickets because I am paying around $10 more a week for gas since it shot up 50 cents in only a couple of months.
So my answer is "yes" if you are on a budget and "no" if you've got lots of money to blow.

Higher gas prices will affect everything. All items that are made of plastic, or have plastic in them will rise in price, since plastic is petroleum-based. All items (even like grocery produce) that are shipped from other areas will rise in price, since the shippers will have to pay more to transport.
People, especially those with vehicles that have six-cylinder engines, will find they will have to cutback on things and trips and travel.
If anything, my hunch is that the lotteries may be in for increased business due to all of this, since people will be looking for some way to make up the cash, regardless of how irrational it may seem.

You may be right. For most players, the term
"rational lottery player" is an oxymoron.

Higher gas prices wouldn't affect my own buying of lottery tickets at all. As a retiree with little interest in traveling, I put less than 3000 miles per year on my vehicle these days. So I might complain about the prices, but it really doesn't affect the budget much. However, I voted "yes," as I think the majority of working people would be affected, and I know most retirees, too, travel far more than I do.

While waiting in line this morning to buy my lottery tickets there was five people ahead of me buying tickets also.

Gas prices have been trending upward for well over a year now, and many state lotteries are reporting record sales. Here are a few examples:

Georgia Lottery Raises Record Amount for Education

"Fiscal year 2006 third quarter sales also soared to a record amount of $885,148,031. The transfer and sales amounts are an all-time record for any quarter in Georgia Lottery history..."

Tenn. Lottery transfers nearly $80 million to education

"The Tennessee Lottery is giving the state $79.6 million for education today, a record for a single quarter since the lottery began more than two years ago, lottery officials announced..."

Wisconsin Lottery Posts Record Quarter

"The Wisconsin Lottery said it has had its best quarter ever. The lottery posted sales of just more than $142 million from January through March, the third quarter of the state's fiscal year. Previously, the fourth quarter of 1995 was the best when sales grew to nearly $140 million..."

In My case, having to put more money in the tank takes from my lottery spending. People on fixed incomes as well, where will the extra come from that is being put in the tank to play lottery tickets. If its not there its not there and when the money runs out before the end of the week? Conclusion.. No extra money for tickets and how does a person whom is retired find a way for extra money?
I can find ways for extra money because I am younger, however I noticed the fuel prices is driving Internet Business down as well.

China's skyrocketing economy which is using an unprecedented amount of crude, plus the fact refineries have had to stop production in order to implement government mandated blends for summer are two of the factors which are driving gas prices up now.
Any protests will not eliminate those two factors of supply and demand which dictate our price at the pump.

thanks konane.i was wondering the reason behind it.china being so big and having the worlds biggest population i can see where there could be tension between the united states and china further in the future.....
