Good points, I'm an "old guy" too, at least as compared to most here I'd guess. Except for a stint working in a refinery and a little time with the phone company, my background is military and then casino work.
The casino work gave me a little more of an inside look at this kind of thing, and like I said in the last post in the tipping part, let me add that often people "in the business" can be the worst.
Many of them are good tippers themselves (A good tipper is known as a "George", most casino people have no idea why that name but it comes from "Generous George". Players are either "George" or "Stiff". Dealers have been known to spend hours debating whether a player is a Stiff or a George. "I'm telling you, the guy's a George." "No he ain't, he's stiff...."
But here's the thing, and I actually saw this far too many times. A dealer is on a game and a player gets lucky, let's say they bought in for $50 and walks with $500 and throws in a $25 tip (known as a "toke", in Nevada it's tokes). That dealer says,
"What a stiff, wins $500 and gives us $25."
Same dealer, after the shift, goes out and plays. Next day at work that same dealer - "He only gave us $25" is saying,
"I wnet out and made a laydown last night, had the boys on the pass line for $1, bet a $1 eleven for them, and a $1 hard six."
In other words, when someone handed him a $25 tip, he consideredd that person chintzy, but when he made three $1 bets "for the boys" it was an event. I always asked guys like that when eas the last time thye had tipped anyone $25.
One thing that has surprised me in both this and the tipping thread is hardly anyone has mentioned tipping for luck. That's one of the main reasons a lot of people do it.
While I'm at it, let me tell this story. We had a player from colorado who was a really nice guy (not always the case for people who bet a lot). He caugt a roll one night, won a lot, and later on the pit boss told the two crap crews the guy liked to meet at a very popular Vegas bar after work.
The guy threw a party for the boss and the dealers, everything was paid for, everything. This should go in the Guiness Book of World Records, but even the tail waitresses at this bar refused any tips, everytime somoen tried to tip them, they said,
"Not necessary, Don has taken care of everything."
Vegas waitresses refusing tips- WHOA!
