Mega Millions lottery jackpot increased to $216 million

Mega Millions

The jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery drawing has grown to $216 million, the largest Mega Millions jackpot in more than 10 months.

The rollover occurred because none of the tickets sold for Friday night's $177 million drawing matched all five numbers and the Mega Ball number. The next drawing will be Tuesday night.

There were 17 second-prize winners from Friday night's drawing: 3 from California, 1 from Georgia, 2 from Illinois, 1 from Maryland, 2 from Michigan, 5 from New York, 2 from Ohio, and 1 from Washington.  Each second-prize ticket matched all five numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $250,000.  The California second-prize tickets are worth $160,600 apiece.

Also, 78 players matched four of the five numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $10,000.  Ten of those tickets, from California, are worth $13,140 each.

The winning numbers from Friday night's drawing were: 3, 18, 21, 38, and 50. The Mega Ball number was 43.

The $216 million jackpot to be drawn on Tuesday represents the largest Mega Millions jackpot since Tuesday, April 18, 2006, when a $265 million jackpot was won by one ticket in Ohio.

Mega Millions is played in twelve states in the United States.  Drawings are held Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 PM Eastern Time.

CASH Only

I had a $3 winner from last night (1+1.) I've already played $7 for Tuesday, and bought a $2 ticket as a tip for a waitress I have a crush on (her boyfriend died last year.) Later today I will buy $10 for my trustee, whose birthday is the night of the drawing.

Needless to say I like to buy MM tickets as gifts (always cash value, since NY still requires the choice to be made when you play.) I never buy NY Blotto tickets for others.

I actually won my $15 back....that's a first. I'm sure we'll all keep our fingers crossed for Tuesday. Good luck everyone!

Let the good times Roll! How exciting to see this game increase !

May I ask if the second tier prize has had more then 17 winners on that level? That seems awefully high. If I recall it averages around 7 or 8 . Just the thought of hitting the second tier level is happiness ! I was very shocked to see that Lil Ole Maryland actually got a second tier level winner. THere is hope for that state and I want to be the one to bring the BIG JACKPOT home to them!

The results for each individual drawing  can vary from what probability suggests, but the number of winners is related to the  number of tickets that are sold. We should only expect an average number of winners if ticket sales for that drawing are also average.  For the last draw the estimated annuity went from 150 to 177 million which would mean sales of about 52 million tickets, which is a lot higher than usual. The odds against matching 5+0 are about 4 million to 1, so 52 million tickets would suggest about 13 5+0 winners, but 17 winners is  easily within a normal range for  sales of that level.

I've made the drive to Virginia to get my Mega Millions ticket.  I also played a $10 scratch off while there and won $20.  I like their scratch offs much more than NC.

Sure glad my home state of Massachusetts has Season tickets, my brother got mine for Mega Millions since KY does not have Mega Millions.  We're stuck with Powerball! May still have to drive to Ohio if it gets way up there though!!

It's funny cause there was just an article that said people aren't playing as much as they used to. I still insist that more people play when jackpots are higher, we all know that there are slim odds, but when the jackpot is steep, what's a few bucks? People spend over $5 a day on cigarettes, so that's pretty much how I justify spending $10 on large lotto drawings. Someone's gotta win right?

My brother in laws urged everybody in the family to buy Mega Millions. Then, I thought the same story would go on in many families statewide.

This will be the last rolling for this jackpot.
