$325 MILLION: Mega Millions lottery nears record high

Mega Millions

Last night Mega Millions became the second United States lottery game in less than a week to cross the $300 million jackpot level.

On Saturday one single ticket from Indiana scored a $314 million Powerball win, and now the lottery-playing public will get another shot at an even bigger prize.

Because none of the tickets sold for Tuesday's $250 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball, the jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery game grew to $325 million for the Friday drawing.

The results of the Friday Mega Millions drawing will be shown a few minutes after the draw takes place at 11:00 PM Friday night (Eastern Time) at USA Mega (www.usamega.com).

The announcement of one or more jackpot winners, or else an even higher jackpot, will be made approximately three hours later at USA Mega.

There were 12 second prize winners from Tuesday night's drawing: 2 from California, 1 from Georgia, 1 from Maryland, 1 from Massachusetts, 1 from Michigan, 1 from New Jersey, 2 from New York, 1 from Ohio, 1 from Virginia, and 1 from Washington.  Each second-prize ticket matched all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $250,000.

The California second prize tickets were worth $425,673 each, because California does not use the same fixed-prize amounts that the other Mega Millions states award.

Also, 135 tickets matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $10,000, except the 23 California winners of the third prize, who won an extra $95.

The winning numbers from Tuesday's drawing were 37, 40, 48, 53 and 56. The Mega Ball number was 44.

The Texas Megaplier was 4.

Detailed information about last night's drawing, including all prize amounts, number of winners at each prize level, drawing video, and more, can be found at the USA Mega web site: http://www.usamega.com/mega-millions-drawing.asp?d=8/28/2007

The last drawing was not adjusted upwards. Sales must be down. The good side to that is that it might actually roll one more time and then it would really be the biggest pot ever offered. It would have to be adjusted to $330 to get $200 million in cash.

It will crack the $400,000,000 mark, it will surpass the mark set earlier by MM in March.

I have been having dreams where the lotto jackpot was $622 million dollars. Perhaps it is a sign of things to come.  If it rolls over it would be about $415million, then roll over to about 515 million and then somehow go norrht of $600million.  what would the net cash value of that be?  First thing I would do is buy the Suze Orman kit so I can create a trust myself!

who wants to come to my world of lotto extravaganza?

One more roll to $400 million, c'mon MM you can do it!

It went up 75 mil since the last time. If it rolls, it will surely be the 1st to cross the 400 million dollar mark. I don't think it will though...I'm hoping to win this one!

Actually the drawing for Friday Mega Millions Jackpot will be $400+ million dollars.  The last huge MM went from $270m to $390m on the day following to the drawing date.

I predict this Friday MM Jackpot to be $400+ million dollars and I'm so happy because I'm going to win it ; )  My parents can finally retire from their crummy job :) and enjoy a good easy life.

Does anyone know if there is a cap on MM jackpots? I had heard that either Powerball or MM had a cap in which other prizes would substantially grow in value should the cap limit be reached.

Yes, it's actually called the Match 5 Bonus prize. Here's a description of it from the PowerBall website:

Match 5 Bonus Prize

Whenever the Powerball jackpot reaches a record level, the amount of the jackpot prize is limited to increases for each draw of no more than $25 million. The prize money collected in excess of the maximum $25 million increase, will be placed into the Match 5 Bonus prize pool and will accumulate until there is a jackpot winner. When there is a jackpot winner, the Match 5 Bonus prize pool will be divided equally among all winners of the Match 5 prize. The prize will be paid in one cash lump sum.

The Match 5 Bonus prize is in addition to any Power Play prizes that may be won. The Match 5 Bonus prize is not multiplied. A Match 5 winner who also played the Power Play option will win the original $200,000, the amount paid under the Power Play multiplier option, and the new Match 5 Bonus effective bonus prize. Consider the following scenario: A player matches the five white numbers, another player hits the jackpot by matching all five white numbers plus the red Powerball, MUSL draws the Power Play number "4", and there is $385,000 available for each Match 5 winner as an additional Match 5 Bonus prize for the drawing. This player would then win $200,000 (the original Match 5 prize) + $600,000 (the extra monies created from the Power Play) + $385,000 (the actual Match 5 Bonus) for a total of $1,185,000. Put another way, the player has his $200,000 prize multiplied by 4, and then he also receives the additional $385,000 Match 5 Bonus prize.

Although it is unlikely, it is possible that no Match 5 winner will exist for a drawing where the jackpot is won and in where a Match 5 Bonus Prize pools exists. In this case, the Match 5 Bonus prize pool will be paid out to the Match 4+1 winners.

Mega Millions doesn't have this.

Hopefully you saw the last sentence in the reply to you: "Mega Millions doesn't have this."

The answer may have been confusing because you asked, "Does MM have a cap?" and the first word was "Yes" in the reply.

Mega Millions does NOT have a cap on jackpot increases.  Only Powerball has such a cap.
