Listen to the part where the black guy in the begining is talking about:

"We are not going to try we are going to hack it"

"oh we are going to use a software that is available on the internet that is free...And then he goes on and say:

"there are plenty of programs that can crack passcodes...and then he says:

"it just cracked this person passcode or encryption code": and look at those numbers: 43, 52, 41, 43, 4, 45, 44, 57, 45, 50, 4, 45...ontop of the numbers it says: keysize: 13....

Guys i dont know about hacking but those numbers look like seed numbers...Notice when he says: "encryption code" doesn't encryption uses RNG so it they can crack the encryption code it means they can cracked the RNG or RNG's Seed...And a RNG is random, look at those numbers they are random...Again i am not an expert in fact i am the dumbest person about the subject...

Anyways if these people can crack the seed they can win the lotto anytime they like...YOu may say, oh they will had been rich by now...Fact is that few games have RNG's plus is my hunch that they make more money hacking than playing the lotto the only valuable game to win in the RNG lotto is Pick5 and we all know that Pick5 only selects 1 winner and it doesnt pay that high because pick4 you will have to select too many Seed ouput numbers to find out which one is it if is not changed already...Dont believe me?? For instance they can find a way to hack into some kind of military base of high value but before they do it they talk to the pentagon and tell them we can show you how to hack into one of your bases and in exchange we want 400 million dollars...Sort of show the pentagon its weaknesses...And it will not surprise me if the pentagon pays for it...

That's ridiculous, for one, the draw lotteries use physical machines to draw their balls. The most common being the gravity type where carefully stored sets of measured and weighed balls are agitated by paddles rotating in opposite directions and when a door is open at the bottom of the device, a measured number of balls exit the machine for display. There's no random number generator involved. Cracking a RNG seed is pointless without knowing which RNG algorithm is being used, many simple RNG algorithms involve multiplying the seed by one or more large prime numbers, adding another large prime number and taking a modulus of the result The RNG algorithms that i have implemented and found most successful have been to treat the seed as a starting value in a fibonacci sequence and taking the modulus of the result along the way. Regardless, a modulus is taken so there's a fair bit of information loss that prevents reverse engineering the algorithm or the sequence.

When a hacker "cracks" a password, it's done by brute force ie.: the computer runs through all possible combinations till a match is found, the secret to "cracking" is how to order the search set to take advantage of idiosyncracies that people have such as using pet names, license plate numbers and actual words in their passwords. A lottery draw machine has no favorite number, aunt or dog and hence there is no idiosyncracies to take advantage of.

Scratch off lottery tickets involve the use of RNG's in the same way that video slot machines do but the seed is determined from well known physically random sources such as the computer time when the computer is started. Scratch off tickets will also be printed on several printing presses and these machines would each have their own RNG using a seed based on the exact time that they were started so you can't count on patterns from more than one roll being from the same RNG and there wouldn't be enough tickets in a roll to identify the seed being used even if you did know the algorithm.

Most scratch off strategies try to take advantage of certain printing practicalities such as most rolls being printed with only the minimum number of winning prizes so that the more expensive customized runs with higher value prizes are minimized therefore resulting in hot and cold rolls/packs. The possibility that there might be more alignment marks per ticket with the hot rolls/packs resulting in tell tale black "L" marks in the corners of the tickets from the cross hairs used to line up the printing presses, etc.

About the only way hacking would help you is if you can hack into the central database and download which tickets have what prizes for the scratchoff games and where those rolls/packs have been activated after shipment.

The Pentagon doesn't pay, they confiscate and you almost always come out on the short end of the stick when dealing with government. When I was a teenager, they hadn't establish laws against hacking but one of my friends was still snagged for "Grand Theft Computer Time" but only because long distance phone bills were involved and only because he was the one with the 300 baud modem, the rest of us were too poor to have anything traced to us but we still all trashed our phonebooks just in case. Believe me, if hacking could pick lotto numbers, it would've been done already.

This 'Hacking' possibility is one real good reason for Ping pong balls instead of Computer Random number drawings.

Nice post. The thing is, there is an alarming number of states that don't use real mechanical drawings -- they use computers. (Click State Lottery Report Card in the Results menu to see which ones.)

To say that no drawing has been hacked may be true among states with real drawings (save the single incident in Pennsylvania many years ago), but with computerized drawings the fact is we just don't know.

The only thing we know for sure is that major incidents have occurred, some existing for several months, where large numbers of tickets simply could not win because of "errors".

Were they really errors? Who really knows. It is a fact, however, that someone who knew about the existence of the "error" could in fact have much better odds of winning by not playing one of the bad ticket numbers that had no chance of winning.

If there WAS a hacking success, I would not count on the lottery -- or the computerized drawing manufacturer -- being forthcoming about it. Can you imagine the impact of such a thing? The states totally rely on lottery revenues increasing from year-to-year, and suddenly the public, with its confidence shaken, stops buying tickets for fear of the computerized drawings.

Heck, I don't buy tickets for computerized drawings now. The so-called "errors" are enough for me. Imagine what would happen after a successful hacking attempt or insider job. (The latter is more likely.)

As I've said before, the main danger anytime you involve computers is that someone could hack or rig a drawing, and then un-do the hack to make it appear as if nothing happened.

The scenario is that someone gets a Quick Pick ticket, then programs the computer to draw that number on their ticket, and then the program erases itself after the drawing. It's really not that hard to do if you know what you're doing, and you pay off the right people to gain physical access. Former employees for the computerized drawing manufacturers would have the best ability to do it, because they know the internals of the computers, as well as the operating system and drawing code (and any checksum/validation code that exists).

I can't fathom why the lotteries continue to open up this can of worms. The drawing is the single-most important thing they do. They need to STOP CHEAPING OUT and do their jobs correctly.

I stopped playing the Tennessee Lotto when they went to computerized drawings for the reasons Todd mentioned. There is just too much hidden from the public's view.

I do not believe the games are fair. Winning a jackpot with the odds the way they are is extremely difficult. Imagine your chances should the State manipulate those drawing behind closed doors.

The Pentagon pays: evil militias who have turn good to turn on alquaida IN THE BILLIONS...It did this like 2 or 3 times in Irak and Afganistan it came out on the news...If they can do that what makes you think they cant pay hackers to turn over their secrets...For instance...If the pentagon doesnt pay hackers: let us say 70 million dollars and hackers make an entire state or 2 state have a blackout for 2 days, what happens? The states just like $250 million dollars each in bussiness...Which one is better? the state risk losing: $500 million or losing: $70 million...

The governments best hackers are the ones they busted and put to work for them.

Despite what people think we are the richest country in the world paying millions and billions is nothing to them. We throw money around like it was water.

You shouldn't be worried what the Pentagon is doing, what they do is mostly secret and unless you work for them or with them it's best to just sit back and see what unfolds. Prying into the Pentagon's business could result in the secret service paying you a visit.

i apologize for deviating from the subject...But anyways, hackers dont need to hack grandiosily anything...For instance hackers if they were to collect: 2 pennies every paycheck from: 20 million people for 2 years they will have: 20 million dollars...in 5 years...50 million dollars...Again just 2 pennies...if they WANTED TO.. they could place those 50 million in the bank at: 6% or whatever percentage and in 20 years they will have: $60 million dollars extra..so that will be: 60 million + 50 million = 110 million dollars...Again dont need to hack the lottery or dont need to make a GRANDIOSE HACKING...

Just to show that they dont need to hack the lottery...And most of you dont even notice if you lost: 2 pennies in your bank account...You are paying most attention to the dollars...
