Mega Millions

One ticket from N.Y. wins $162M Mega Millions jackpot

Mega Millions will have modest Christmas jackpot

One ticket bought in Suffolk County, New York, matched all six numbers in the Tuesday Mega Millions drawing to win a $162 million jackpot.

The winning Mega Millions lottery numbers drawn Tuesday night were 3, 33, 35, 39, 45 with a Mega Ball of 13.  The Texas Megaplier was 3.

The winner is unknown, but News 12 reported the ticket was bought at Cards N Things on Route 25A in Rocky Point.

The grand prize had been steadily growing since Nov. 10 when two tickets matched all six numbers. Those tickets, which split the estimated $77 million jackpot, were bought in South San Francisco, California, and Union County, New Jersey.

There was only one winning ticket.  The winner can choose to take the $162 million jackpot as a 29-year annuity or as a lump-sum cash payout of $102 Million.

According to the Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega (www.usamega.com), the after-tax payout to a New York resident for the lump-sum cash option would be $67,350,600, which accounts for the 25% federal and 8.97% state tax withholdings.

In addition to the big jackpot winner, 9 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $250,000 prize: 1 from Georgia, 2 from Maryland, 1 from Michigan, 1 from New Jersey, 3 from New York, and 1 from Texas.

For lottery fans who enjoy giving lottery tickets for Christmas gifts, Mega Millions, it seems, will not be the premier stocking stuffer it could have been if the jackpot had rolled.  We'll find out tonight if Powerball will follow suit, or if it will have a jackpot exceeding $100 million for the drawing on Dec. 26.

Quick pick is the way to go, the winner won using quick pick , and all the numbers were odds including the megaball. Three other people also won $250k using quick pick.  I almost quick playing the megamillions this year but after i noticed how two people won the 8/28/2009 megamillions $336,000,0000 jackpot using a $1 quick pick i keep on playing. The only difference was that the guy from bronx new york chose to play his $1 quick pick in 26 annual payments and the guy from california chose to play his $1 quick pick in cash value. I wonder if the soffolk county person bet $1 or $5 to win with quick pick.that's another dilemma that i have, i don't know if i should play using $1 quick pick or $5 quick pick. I have noticed that when people win using $5 quick pick is because the play more than one $5 ticket.

Blessings and peace to the winner. Although anytime is a great time to win,  perhaps this winning takes on a different meaning because of the economy. Smile

Good observation, as that crossed my mind as well.  It only takes $1 to win, but if you can afford it, spend $5.Big Smile

Also, today & tomorrow, if you spend $5 on Mega Millions, you get a free QP, so why don't you end the year with a bang. Dance

It is not weird that NY and CA win a lot of jackpots...it is simple numbers. There are more lottery players in sheer numbers in NY, CA, or even TX for that matter, so statistically speaking, these type of states should have a larger proportion of the jackpot winners.

Last night was cold so I decided against going to the store to get me some quick picks.

I do have season tickets for mega millions so my hopes were on only that one ticket. I ended up winning $2 for getting the megaball 13.

I could have sworn that somebody from NY would win. States that win include Ohio, Virginia, NJ, NY and California.

Followed closely by Georgia and Michigan. These others MA, WA, IL, MD, TX just work to contribute to the jackpots lol.

I would be over joyed if I hit anything this Christmas season!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Wow...great Christmas gift (though the money technically won't be available to the winner until early 2010).

Dear winner...here's what you need to do. Take $60 million and park it in low risk investments like CDs and bonds yielding about 2% interest annually ($1.2 million a year for you buddy! That's $25k a week for life), then take $5 million and help out family. The remaining $2 million is for you to spend on whatever you want...a $900k house, some cars, travel, stash $100k in savings just for emergencies etc.

You're all set!!

Yeah, that would be true that the number of players in NY would dictate more winners........Well, ...Ok, then how about NY bow out of the Mega lotto and just be they're own "super lotto" within New York since in the current scenerio the smaller states that Never win are never GONNA win and therefore are just giving our dollars away each week so someone in the bigger states can snap it up ! Hehehe...If Ya think about it though, It DOESN'T make sense that if it's the Easy Pics that keep winning -why is it the machine located in NY that keeps spitting out the winning ticket ?? I mean, anybody in little old lonely town anywheres can buy an easy pic, right ?

Talk about sour grapes; did you get a lump of coal for XMAS???  Would you want the same thing to happen to you if you were the winner?? Cut some slack--it was their time to win, plain and simpleApprove

LckyLary

you forgot to say put $500K in a brief case (I have one just in case!) to bring to the "gentleman's club".

There is also no longer a big Powerball jackpot. The winner was in Kentucky.
That really fries my chicken!  I had 2+Bonus on Weds.

michimac

Haha...yeah, No sour Grapes here though-  just a little good natured "Ribbing" to the winner ..... But I'm gonna tell you all that if/when I win, I'm still gonna log on here & complain so nobody knows it's me who won!! ...hahaha.....That way I can hopefully bypass a multitude of new & sudden 'Friends" !

But also, don't kid yourself's TOO much about the Lotto $$$ helping Schools all that much, I mean- look around you ! In my town, MOST of the old Schools which are very beautiful & decorative old brick buildings are boarded up & rotting away due to lack of funds...or whatever reason...  it sure is a shame...you'd think "15 BILLION paid to schools" as the billboard by the train station states would be enough to keep them open for ever ! Thats right.....BILLION   Crazy

sirbrad's avatarsirbrad

Funny how the jackpots never go to record levels anymore, and are won between $100 and $200 million. I usually predict when they will be won as I did with the powerball last night. Yet all this time they do not get won and then all the sudden they get won as if the odds change. I don't believe the whole more people playing theory either. I still smell a fish in the large jackpot games. I won't ever believe they are legit unless I or someone I know wins.

michimac

I Agree! Your right about that : as I think about it, after 20+ years of playing, I don't personally know anyone who's ever won the biggie. ..I don't even know anyone who know's anyone that ever won it !!!  However I do know legit winners of a couple hundred thou....but never the millions.

I never played Easy pics cause I thought the odds of the machine picking the same 6 #s again within the next few hours (I'm a last minute player) would be too unrealistic- but if they say the easy pics are the majority of the winners then I'll give it try !

Also as above I stated the billboard here says 15 Billion went to schools - well , my mistake, it says 20 Billion ! I have no idea how many schools are here in Michigan but i really gotta think that with 20 bil- every one of those doors should be open with class in session this morning !! ya think ?

Be safe out there on New Years Eve everyone !!!!!

Oh yeah ...and HOORAY for the Power Partywinner in Kentucky !
