I'm sure this topic has been posted before, but I am fairly new to the forums and just wanted some advice. Saturday night, I hit 4 out of 5 on Carolina Cash 5. I was shocked to win anything, because aside from a bit in the casino, I've never won much gambling. So I am happy and grateful...a $197.00 return on $6.00 worth of tickets. But I still keep thinking about how close I was to $700,000.00. (If I'd only chosen the 33 instead of the 37....) I'm sure those of you that play the lottery often must face this more frequently. Does it bother you? It's not bothering me a lot, but enough to post this, a small glimpse of what might have been. Still, I don't want to seem like I'm feeling sorry for myself, because winning a secondary prize is fantastic to me.

I don't want to talk much about the near misses I deal with on a daily basis, playing the pick 3 and pick 4.

Today, midday, I played, 401, it dropped this evening, I did not have it?

O-M-G, I've been playing like this for 2 weeks, Saturday night, I played, 750, 705, 075, it dropped midday Sunday, I did not have it.

I"m about ready to bust a lottery terminal down to the metal, lol, like the saying, "bust a head to the white meat"?

Wildspecks, my game is Pick4 and pick3 not much Lotto or mega hardly at all, but when I miss it by one in the Pick4; I run to my work out sheet to see where I turned left when I should have gone straight! and I make my corrections just in case the thread of numbers come back that way again! and then I keep it moving.

In your case all I can tell you is don't beat yourself up; remember when you leave earth and you shoot for the moon and you fall on a star, that still leaves you closer to the moon!

Please tell me it was a typo. The 5 of 5 is $700,000 but 4 of 5 is only $ 197! Talk about cold blooded! Thats worse than Thatscarychicks $20k for pick 5. I still get mad at that one!

This is me today ...i played 850 119 906 905 midday 750 fell ...didn't go play evening cause i fell asleep and 119 fell in the eve. tomarrows another day.

Tis I when I lose, Then I put on that song by Goapele (pronounced gwa-puh-LAY.) The lyrics include: "I know you're down. when you gonna get up?" LOL I then become encouraged and I start a new rundown!

I almost always play Pick-3. In 2006 it seemed like almost every day that I played (about 3 or 4 times a month) I would miss winning $40 (a box in straight-box) by 1 digit. It usually didn't affect me since it was just a small amount of money.

The one time that I would have won a decent sum of money ($500) was the time that I had a number I thought was going to win based on a pattern, then I forgot to play it, then it came up. I kind of felt like an idiot for a few minutes. But it did not bother me too much because the number I forgot to play was my birthday.

Today's winning 3-ball is going to be a number between 000 and 999.

In a lot of states, lotteries benefit education. That makes the REAL winners the only people who can't play!

The odds of matching 4 of 5 in the Carolina Cash 5 are 1 in 3387 and the prize is pari-mutuel. The percentage of the prize pool, I think, hovers around 15%. But still, I think that the prize for 1 in 3387 should be AT LEAST $1,000. I would not mind smaller jackpots if it meant higher payouts for lower prizes in the game.

Today's winning 3-ball is going to be a number between 000 and 999.

I like when topics like these are raised; because it helps us think and focus! I have come to realize, that I don't really "deal" with misses. So "how do I deal with near misses?" I don't deal with it at all, I keep it moving! I concentrate on Winning!!!

Think of it this way Wildspecks,

Near misses get you something. Like, 2 of 5 gets you nothing right? But lets say (for Calif Fantasy Five) a near miss of 3 of 5 gets you an extra $5 or even $10 of "free" play or in my case was money to pay for a coworker"s lunch after he helped me with HTML and CSS coding.

Or the near miss of the 4 of 5 that i got which gave me the opportunity to pay a few bills and buy extra QPs, and purchasing a new Handbang.

I love getting those 3 of 5. I think of it as "okay there another set that includes three of my numbers that I can knock off the list. Mine set will hit next!"

I love that feeling!

Many years ago I match 5 out 6 when the Lotto jackpot was $40 million and won $868, but I looked at from the other point of view; "If only my missing number had been drawn". Are we trying to match the numbers that will be drawn or are we playing numbers in combinations that we hope will be drawn?

Any time we play an abbreviated wheel there is chance 5 of our numbers will hit and we find we don't have the correct 5 number combo. The first time it happened to me, I was playing a 15 number 3if5 wheel and actually lost 2 bucks so it really wasn't about not having the right numbers. We can play a MM wheel using all 56 number and all 46 bonus balls in a 2if5 wheel for $46 so which numbers are drawn is irrelevant.

Another way to look it, you bet $6 to win $700,000 and still won $191 and that profit could eventually lead you to a huge jackpot win.

I loo at the ticket, look at the winning numbers, look up at the sky and ask the Lottery Fairy if she's getting a real kick out of entertaining herself like this.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

Thanks all! I appreciate your advice and support. The secondary prize was $194.00, but I matched a couple of numbers in another set, bringing the amount I won up to $197.00. I think the second prize was around $320.00 something when the jackpot reached a million. I agree, the secondary prize should be more. And it is true, now I have more money to play with...I was down to about my last $7.00 in my lottery fund when I won this. The next time the jackpot goes up, I'll be able to play and not feel guilty because to quote Gail Howard, I'm playing with their money, lol.
