Pennsylvania Mega Millions lottery sales falling short of target

Mega Millions

So far, the Mega Millions lottery game hasn't been the big winner Pennsylvania Lottery officials predicted.

Lottery officials hoped Mega Millions would generate $80 million in sales by June 30, the end of the fiscal year. Sales for the multi-state lottery game with big jackpots — similar to Powerball — began Jan. 31.

From February through April, Mega Millions generated $26.2 million in sales. To meet the initial target, the game would have to sell $54 million in May and June.

Kirstin Alvanitakis, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Lottery, remains optimistic that the new game could meet the $80 million mark.

"We are on track," Alvanitakis said. "It's a new game. Each month, we do a little bit better."

Alvanitakis said sales may have been hampered initially by the rough economy and a snowy February.

"You can't draw any conclusions on sales based on the month of February," she said.

Overall, sales of all Pennsylvania Lottery games have dipped 1 percent in the current fiscal year compared to the previous year, according to state Department of Revenue figures.

Is it so hard to come up with a game so many people can win a little bit of money instead of one person winning so much money they can even spend in  lifetime.geez.....Why would 1 person need 200 millions dollars....Thats why I dont play,it's kinda like stupid to throw away money.......we need a country raffle to play each week...then each state can have whats left after the draw...If each state is hurting because of sales...just a good idea to me......

PA is a powerhouse in Powerball... so of course people will not buy mega millions because they think that they can win with powerball "monkey see monkey do"

i guess i am the perfect example...

TN offers mega millions and i go to GA to spend 3 times as much on my tickets.

i play powerball in GA too. because..... well their hasn't been a jackpot winner in TN in oh 6 years now.... hmmm..... how many winners in GA on mega millions... i rest my case!!!

...a rough economy and a snowy February....

Huh?

How about 4 new instants a month and too many games period.

I'm sure they're not hurting so, no sympathy here.

I am from PA and I play the larger jackpot of Powerball or Mega Millions. If the jackpots are close in size, I play $1 on both.

This week, I am have $2 on the Wednesday Powerball drawing!  Big spender!

A house at the lake sounds nice ..... and a Rolls or Bentley! Don't worry about me spending it all ........

BoBoMcQuickfeet

Oh yeah?  Well, so far, the Mega Millions game hasn't lived up to my expectations of winning the lottery.  So there, Pennsylvania!  Nyah!  Nyah!  Nyah!

:P

But seriously, McQuickFeet needs some new shoes.  How about throwing a little lottery money my way?

I can say being from Pa, they have not advertised Mega Millions as much as they did Powerball. I would think that is the problem with sales. They just got rid of Super 7, again, to have MM. Super 7 was a horrible game, two bucks and the prize was less than half of the jackpot amount. A good idea would be advertise MM again, and stop having Gus the groundhog take up 99% of the commercial time, to get people to play the game.:)

Well for one the mega if you buy for the week it is the same numbers for both draws. Where I buy tickets they yell all the time about that.

And yes they have to many games and keep changing them. Now they are doing away with Mix and Match and bring back Match 6.

They do advertise Mega Million with Powerball. Maybe they should do away with Gus.

New Jersey Is loosing credibility fast!!  rd, I'm a telling you a national raffle would work only if;   New Jersey is not in it! They already have 4 numbers that they have held for 27 years!!! like 3333 and  0000 for 18 Years! No telling what they will do in a raffle.Confused

There are millions of homeless people in the world and they are complianing about $26. I don't play the MM or the PB much anymore namely because they are crap games with crap payouts. I liked Super 7 and Lucky for life but PA always gets rid of the good games and brings in crap ones. I win the Big 4 straight once in awhile but the PB and MM are just rip offs.

I agree. Super 7 wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. Mix n Match was another dud...$2.00 for a draw that sometimes never broke $100,000..At least Cash 5 has better odds, better payout and only for a dollar.

Too much Gus....<snip> rodent.

Plus they have alot hi way bill boards with PB and no MM.

In addition, I think that the MM has been won more often since it hs been added, causing the JP not to rollover like PB.  I like MM, it has better odds (although astronomical) plus the second place prize is $250,000 vs $200,000.

They need to give it time, they should look at the sales of MM when the JP was reset for PB and the JP was higher for MM. If the PB is won this week and is reset, and won a few more times, allowing MM to have a much larger jp, then they can look at sales to see where they need a boost.

Even with adding Match 6, they should run a once a week or month lucky for life lottery (a $1000 a week or $100,000 a yr for life)....and get rid of some of the scratchers. The problem with scratchers is if all of the jackpots have been won, the tickets are still sold, even if they are not supposed to be sold.
