Says $105M is all hers; McDonald's workers say it's theirs
Mega Millions mania has plunged a Maryland McDonald's into a bubbling cauldron of controversy hotter than a deep-fried apple pie.
Workers at the fast-food joint who pooled their cash for tickets are furious at a colleague who claims she won with a ticket she bought for herself and has no intention of sharing.
"We had a group plan, but I went and played by myself. [The 'winning' ticket] wasn't on the group plan," McDonald's "winner" Mirlande Wilson 37, told The Post yesterday, insisting she alone bought one of the three tickets nationwide that will split a record $656 million payout.
"I was in the group, but this was separate. The winning ticket was a separate ticket," the single mother of seven said as she and her fiancé left her home in the squalid Westport neighborhood to attend church.
The Haitian immigrant refused to show what she said was the winning ticket, claiming she had it hidden in another location and would present it to lottery officials today.
Pressed as the day went on, she became more cagey.
"I don't know if I won. Some of the numbers were familiar. I recognized some of [them]," she said. "I don't know why" people are saying differently. "I'm going to go to the lottery office [today]. I bought some tickets separately."
With winning tickets also sold in Illinois and Kansas, a single Maryland winner would get an after-tax lump sum of $105 million, or $5.59 million a year for 26 years.
If Wilson won, and if it was with a pooled work ticket, the situation would be shockingly similar to that of New Jersey lottery louse Americo Lopes, who tried to screw five former colleagues after hitting a $24 million jackpot before a jury ordered him to spread the wealth.
Wilson's co-workers — who make little more than $7.50 an hour — are sizzling with anger over the notion.
"She can' t do this to us!" said Suleiman Osman Husein, a shift manager and one of 15 members in the pool. "We each paid $5. She took everybody's money!"
A man identifying himself as the boyfriend of a McDonald's manager named Layla, who was part of the pool, said Wilson bought tickets for the group at the 7-Eleven in Milford Mill, where the winning ticket was sold.
The group's tickets — along with a list of those who contributed to the pool — were left in an office safe at the burger joint, said the man, who gave only his first name, Allen, as he stood next to Layla. She declined to comment.
Then, late Friday, before the night's drawing, the owner of the McDonald's, Birul Desai, gave Wilson $5 to buy more tickets for the pool on her way home from work, and she went back to the 7-Eleven and bought them, Allen said.
Wilson took those tickets home with her, Allen said.
But Wilson insisted yesterday that she had bought the second batch with an unidentified pal — not for the pool — and that the winning ticket was among them.
A day earlier, a delirious Wilson had called co-workers to break the news — tellingly used the first-person singular.
"I won! I won!" she cried, Allen said.
Another colleague, Davon Wilson, no relation, said he was there when Mirlande Wilson called.
"She said, 'Turn on the news.' She said she had won. I thought it was a joke or something. She doesn't seem like a person who'd do this," he said.
Allan said he and Layla went to Wilson's home and pounded on the door for 20 minutes until she finally came out.
"These people are going to kill you. It's not worth your life!" Allen said he told her.
"All right! All right! I'll share, but I can't find the ticket right now," she finally said, according to Allen.
Yohannes Michael, a clerk at the 7-Eleven where Wilson bought the tickets, expressed doubts about her story when he said yesterday that lottery officials have reviewed the store's video and believe that a man bought the winning ticket. Lottery rep Carole Everett would not confirm that.
Reached at his Fairfax, Va., home, Desai, the McDonald's owner, declined to comment except to say, "It's all bulls--t, if you ask me. It's speculation."

won't believe a word of this, they never should have printed this story in the first place!!
I always play in a small pool and I am the pool caption. I buy the tickets and scan and email it to the group. That way there is a timestamp and everyone knows the ticket numbers. I can buy as much as I want on my own ...No issues there..
Oh boy, here come's another dispute over who gets the wealth. If that lady, won, she should get stripped of her money because she's acting GREEDY like a mother (watch your mouth)
I organized pools. Too often the pool organizer is blamed.
It seems that a lot of legal disputes involve the sole winner of the prize claim they purchased the winning ticket for them self when they were the designated person to buy the tickets for the pool.
What are the odds of that?

According to the MD Lottery, the winning ticket in Maryland was a single Quick Pick - not a $5 ticket. So I'm not sure how much of this story is true. We'll just have to keep following it. Sometimes these things have turned out to be false in the past.
Yeah, absolutely. This story is really bogus, imo. We'll just have to keep following but I'm pretty sure that she does not have anything. She seemed so uncerain saying the numbers look familiar. Well, that just doesn't cut it. Sometimes the media overexaggerates things.

No matter what happens out of this entire fiasco.......We all can take a valuable lesson or two when it comes to winning the lottery....."Pools with no rules are for fools".......Trying to fix misspoken claims is like pushing a snowball down the side of a mountain on a warm day
Here is the problem she took the group ticket home without authorization and now she is saying the group ticket is the lossing ticket and that the winning ticket is personal. Well if you can walk to 7-eleven to buy it you should be able to walk back to mcdonald to put it in the safe b4 the draw so there won't be any conflict of interest. And why did the group trust her she doesn't look like an angel.lol
There is such an easy way to play a work lotto pool that would avoid all this potential lying and deceipt:
1) Each person who plays in that individual lotto pool must sign a group pool signup form every time they play the pool. No signature, no pool entry, no exceptions. The lotto pool form is to spell out all of the rules for playing in that pool.
2) All pool lottery tickets are to be bought the day before the drawing, no exceptions. Tickets are to be bought at the same time each drawing, so players know they have a deadline they must meet. If someone wants to join the pool after the tickets are bought or the day of the drawing, they have to wait until next drawing.
3) Make a copy of the pool tickets & distribute a set of them to all members of the pool well before the drawing.
4) Keep a copy of the pool entry forms & tickets for at least 1 year.
5) Any tickets purchased outside the lotto pool are individual tickets & belong to the person who bought them; they're separate from the pool. No exceptions.
If pool players would just follow these simple rules, there would be none of this ridiculous winning ticket drama. Handle this like a business & it'll never be a problem.

If this turns out fake, that's a really heartless joke to play on your co-workers. I'm sure shes unemployed already. This is why i demand copies in our pool. Her manager should of known this.
I too was in a lottery pool years back and was the one to buy the tickets . I also would purchase my own tickets. However, I made copies of all the tickets and gave them to the members The tickets was left in the safe at the school. There was many ways to make a different in your personal tickets even the agent.Maybe she should have purchase her own from a different place.

Todd, I agree, but he (Allen) said that he gave her $5 to buy more tickets which she took home and didn't bring back the new tickets to be put in the safe with the rest of the tickets. She could have bought five single tickets which she didn't bring back to the Mcdonalds safe, I feel that she has to share the money because she can't prove otherwise because she didn't bring the tickets back to the safe with the other tickets.

What get's me is the 7-11 clerk said that the lottery officials reviewed the survelliance video and it shows a man buying the ticket. So let's say (I might be stretching here) that her 'fiance' bought the ticket whose to say the she didn't give him the lotter group money to play with. However she keeps saying 'she bought the ticket.

Thats why is never good to play in a lottery pool. Because face value or word of mouth agreement is never good. Unless there is a written agreement signed by everybody in the pool. Thats why i never play lottery pools. Written agreements is the best way to prevent things like this from happen. And finally have it notarized and then there will be no disputing.
This is why everyone should have a list of the numbers they are going to be playing.

She may be lying because the lottery office said when they viewed the camera it was a male that purchased the tickets but you never know this is what happens with pools.

Sounds like of fishy to me too. But if its true that she has the winning ticket and cashes in and don't share. I am willing to bet , she will be a target for the rest of her life. Also why not share it , its plenty to go around. If the shoe was on the other foot , she would be crying foul as well. Live up to the agreement , be woman about it and do that right thing. I can't understand how she'd be able to support seven children on that income, unless her fianc�e is paid very well or some of her children are adults.

When I ran an office lotto pool. I collected $5.00/person. Had each person sign a sheet next to a number showing everyone that was in the pool for that drawing. Then I would go out & buy the tickets. Everyone in the pool got copies of the tickets & the number of people who sign the sheet. If you spent $20.00, you had to sign the sheet 4 times. Once/$5.00. On the sheet they signed; it had the Grand Prize amount, the date of the drawing and numbers usually 1-100 for those that were in that pool. Everyone knew that if your name wasn't on the sheet & you didn't have copies of the numbers, you were not in that Lotto drawing. If we had 100 numbers with signatures, Everyone that signed the sheet had copies of the $500 dollars worth of tickets prior to the actual drawings. No questions, No problems, Everyone was happy. Every number on the sheet received received equal shares. Our Big Pool didn't start until the jackpot got over 100 Mil.
Agreed! I don't say because I want to impose my values on other people [though I can't see myself having that many kids PERIOD, much less unmarried].
One person raising seven kids just isn't feasible logistically. People of every moral persuasion should be able to agree with that.

Lottery pools can be good and sometimes they can be a bad thing had to learn the hard way 8yrs ago pooling with 5 co-workers and i picked all the numbers.
We had no agreement nothing the 1 co-worker purchased 25 tickets because we put in $5 a piece we won $100,000.00 and this girl just act's a fool well i don't
blame the co-wrokers because my mom and my boyfriend was upset and my boyfriend threaten her and her husband needless to say i never got any money
the co-worker was treating 2 other girls out to eat, she quit the job and her and her husband was fighting over the money it is gone all $68,000.00 of it after taxes
I saw this girl at the karaoke bar she is broke and she had the nerve to speak i rolled my eyes so hard the dj was shocked and ask me what happen when i told him he said

Or don't play at all! People should realize what they are getting themselves into if they don't understand the rules or group play. My co-workers ask me to play in their pool , but i always refuse. When it comes that type of money riding on the line , can me greedy . I just don't like sharing that type of amount of money. Just take it for what its worth
I think she mispoke out of excitement thinking that her personal numbers came. In response, the lottery pool members exploded in anger and now she's too embarressed to say she didn't win a crap. It probably was a combination that seemed similar to hers and before being smart and checking it 10 times she started making phone calls. To me it's the only thing that makes sense. The guy that bought winning ticket is the winner who probably doesn't know her from Eve!

Long ago I was involved in a pool; until we had one nitwit who claimed they would sue everyone/anyone from the pool who won independent of the pool because - simply since the pool was created 'it" created a presumed sharing... everyone was flabergasted.
The pool dissolved immediately as we dumped all available 'pool' funds on the next lottery... and on repeat tickets with self-chosen numbers: 1,2,3,4,5 PB 2... and we had 18 of THAT particular ticket. And with the copies of the tickets was sent out a THIS IS THE FINAL LOTTERY FOR THE GROUP notice... which included the fact that the pool was dissolved and defunct as of the date of the drawing of these tickets.
Boy was the 'loud-mouth' angry... but since we had nothing in place that said the 'money-collector' could NOT do that... that is what the balance of us decided was the smartest thing to do. and we also made sure that NONE of us played ANYTHING for 3 months afterwards.
A "rag" would deserve a good spoof like this.
Maximumfun. Where I am, we have a 2 week pool with a sign up list and rules, etc.
My pool rules may seem a bit too much, but I hope they save us when the pool wins.
I list them every two weeks in my blog for the current two week period.
This way it keeps potential problems and disputes to a minimum.
If she is telling the truth, this is everything I hoped would happen if I wasn't the winner. Classic!

There are probably many pools out there where at least one member feels this same way (it only takes one troublemaker) but hasn't made their move, yet.

haha exactly! what is this world coming up to..if she was sent to go and buy the pool tickets does not matter if she bought one for herself but the pool ticket was the most important thing and thats what people know about. If she did not want to be part she shouldnt have participated with the group. All of this dispute would not have emerged. Really this is pure greedy and i hope it is an april fools joke.

Yeah My husband does this as well, He plays the numbers one week and the next co worker do it the next week. Scan copies and give each one the copy of the tickets, I will never go on anyone's word smh!!
This is one person I hope loses it all.You can almost tell she will squander it .It hasnt been a week and she is already claiming it without consulting lawyers or financial advisors.Sad to say but she will be in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Louise, it is about the lottery however she put her business out there when she chose to go public therefore allowing ALL her business to be discussed. It is alarming too me that ANY WOMAN will have seven(7) kids & not be married, however I did also state that aleast she was/is working. I also said that if her "fiance" did buy the ticket that he needs to marry her especially if he is the father her children.

I don't play pool at the office, but aren't pools supposed to be signed into a document to make them a legal bidden contract? My question is if I play 10 bucks wouldn't some coworkers claim that I was part of a pool?
Do not, not, not, not play lottery pools and if you do, please make copies, send out emails. Hell, even take a picture of the pool tickets in the store. The only ones who are going to win in this case is the lawyers! If she cannot prove it was a personal ticket her best out is to settle. She's going be angry and hurt if she is telling truth, but she doesn't have proof. My winning ticket is going to be just that, mine.
Yeah that part confuses me too especially when she was given $5 to buy "on her way home". It was a last minute purchase doomed to disaster since they were never brought back to the safe.

One theory coud be that she purchased the $5 ticket for the pool and picked up a $1 QP for herself at the same time, this would be more in line with the official word from the MD State Lottery Officials
If this is the case she could easily show the $5 pool ticket along with the $1 QP ticket to prove that she is in fact the owner of the winning ticket
Would the office pool still be able to lay claim to the winning ticket if she produced both and the $5 and $1 tickets? I would assume this would give her a lot more of a legal leg to stand on. If she cannot produce 2 tickets I think she is in for a long legal battle which will end with her splitting the winnings with her co-workers.
Bottom line, pretty pathetic that a once in a lifetime "gift" is turning into a 3 ring media circus fueled by greed...interested to see how this all shakes out

The lottery director of the Maryland was just interviewed on Inside Edition. It seems they he thinks it is a hoax. The also showed the stores where the other 2 winners was sold to see if anyone knew who the winner is.

That makes it even more interesting, along with the info the article gave about it being a male who bought the ticket and her claim saying she isn't completely sure if she won and that the numbers looked similar.
I guess it could be that she now knows she was some numbers off or read something wrong and is in fact not a winner, but she's even more scared now to tell any of the pool members they/she didn't win.
This is more exciting than the draw itself.
1.)If Ms. Wilson is fooling around, she is in the wrong place to be doing this. She lives in a pretty rough part of town. If her face and story gets out there, she would never have any peace.
My advice to her is to get her family out of there now. That is not the part of town where you want to be weaving money around in.
2.) If she brought her ticket at the store that was indicated, she went a long way from home to purchase that ticket. But, maybe she was trying to find some place outside of the city to play.
I've heard people who live in the city say that only the people in the county win the jackpots.
I do hope she and her 7 children will be safe.

I used to photo copy the tickets I purchased for the group. Then I would give a copy to all the participants. Then I'd by my own. Easy solution.
The area has low income dwellers, but it not a ghetto slum, just rough. I'm thinking there may be despite people around her that she needs to watch out for.
I'll tell you one thing. She sure likes the media coverage she's getting.
She asked the media to leave her alone, but she keeps opening her front door to be filmed when ever the cameras are turned on.

The system discourages marriage. A single woman with children gets federal/state benefits that a married woman does not. The worst thing to be is a single man with no 'disabilities' or addictions and no custody.
I thought Lotterypost already knew she was lying because of the post made here from the Maryland member who got the private Facebook photos about the 'real' winner, a man. I agree with everyone who says she's a media whore. People lie for attention. It doesn't matter that the lie is outrageous or easily picked apart, the goal is attention and she's won that in spades.
I wonder if she's kin to the American lady in Euclid, Ohio who lied about having a winning Powerball ticket several years ago? It was sick, people were scrounging around the convenience store which sold the ticket because the lady had told the media she had lost the ticket there. Meanwhile, the real winner was quietly getting all her ducks in a row and contacting attorneys and financial planners to properly collect on the ticket. The real winner wasn't studying the media or the brouhaha.
But the lady who lied got to be a 9 days wonder; and her own brood of children (there were more than 5 or 6 in this case as well) got nothing except the excitement of having a liar for a mother.

Wow, there's a good example of something that can go wrong with a lottery pool. We've been pooling at my office, off and on, but no one actually signs anything, and one strong voice in charge insists that it be "shared with everyone", which is a bit VAGUE.... ya know.... so I'm ready to quit with it now. It would not be worth the legal hassles.
Well for one thing, I doubt "Bubba" from "dirtroads Alabama" would be running that yap to everybody about having the winning ticket. A huge majority of folks who live that far out in the sticks mind their own business, and don't stick their nose in that of others. As for your obvious prejedices, I salute you. Just shows you are a human being, and a real one at that. You see, discrimination is a good thing. It means you are choosing only what you precieve as the best to be a part of your life. Your problem is that you is that you don't want others to have that right as well.
If am the actual jackpot winning ticket holder from Maryland, and thus, this woman is just out right telling a lie just to grab attention, I would be a very happy camper. She has taken the spotlight away from me and shined it upon herself. Just makes it that much easier and gives me that much more time to set up a trust in the correct manner, and also an LLC, and just get all my ducks in a row before my lawyer presents the ticket to the lottery folks. Hell, I'd probably sent her a check for a couple hundred dollars for "diversionary services."
If the real winner claims it with a trust ..there will be a lot of McDonalds employees thinking it was this woman. Similar to the ridiculous stunt in Shelbyville In with the man divorcing his woman claiming he had the ticket when the attorney said it was an elderly woman who won.

My theory is that she hid it by stuffing it inside a Chicken McNugget and somebody ate it without noticing because it tasted pretty much the same as the McNugget.
LOL - it might have upped the nutritional facts for the mcnugget since it would have added 'fiber'.
How does someone ever think that they will get away with a hoax like this? Or better yet, how would someone think that they could ever get away with claiming it as trust without embroiling the trust in litigious actions; even if the trust was NOT about these employees, they would be fools to not pursue somekind of 'tell me' action to make sure!

My local news is reporting that a conference will be held tomorrow morning regarding a Maryland winner that has come forward. No info on whether the winner is anonymous or not. Oddly enough, the newstory made no mention of the pool controversy.

Yes the real winners were from the maryland school system...three lucky people...and they still plan to work in the school also..Well Congrets to them ..and as for the Nc D lady ....she was full of donkey dust...i dont understand why someone would lie about winner ...guess she wanted her 15 minutes of fame...
At least the McDonald workers will get a chance to reconsider if they really want to be in a lottery pool with all their co-workers in the future and they don't have to go to court.
