Powerball

Winner stays anonymous

PHOENIX, AZ — The Arizona Lottery announced today that all six $1 million Powerball second prize tickets won in Arizona from the drawing on Wednesday, April 25 have been claimed by one person.

The six $1 million winning tickets were purchased by one Glendale resident at the QuikTrip located at 6702 W. Glendale Ave. in Glendale. The winning numbers were 4, 25, 29, 34, and 43, with Powerball number 29.

The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, claimed the six tickets over the course of three visits to the Arizona Lottery's Phoenix office.

These six wins bring Arizona's count of $1 million second prize Powerball wins to a total of 10, since the new $2 Powerball game launched on January 15, 2012. In addition to this winner from Glendale, Arizona winners have included two Tucson residents, a Phoenix resident and a couple from Fort Mohave. The new game has created approximately 100 millionaires nationwide.

"It was incredible for Arizona to have six $1 million second prize Powerball wins in one night and the excitement around the winning tickets has had everyone buzzing," said Karen Bach, assistant director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. "Arizona is second in the nation for having the most $2 Powerball second prize winners since the game launched and we expect to be congratulating more Arizona millionaires this year than ever before."

The new $2 Powerball game offers many appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million.

The next $2 Powerball draw is Wednesday, May 9 for an estimated jackpot of $70 million.  The winning numbers will be published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the drawing at 11:00 pm Eastern Time.

Knew it! only thing that made sense.

This guy probably has no regrets spending the $2 a ticket, on the new and improved PB.  No Nod

That was a classy way to pull that off. Maybe next time he'll spring for 12 tickets, for a cool $12 million payday!  Banana

I remember people predicting this.....but why? It cannot be a separate trust issue...he could create one main one and/or other ones as well with the money from all 6 tickets at once.

Congrats to the winner.......

"I'd still like to hear 'em say why they played it like that though" same here ridge...What?

hmm... didnt realize AZ allow anonymous collections.  6 tickets... 2$ per ticket = 12$... if they had purchased 4 tickets w/ PP it still would have cost 12$ but they would have had 8M$ instead of 6M$.

I get the 'why anonymous' but some more details would have been nice... like why they went 3X to the lottery hqtrs to collect instead of doing it all at once... that is kinda odd.

There are alot of little 'facts' and details that could be released without putting the winners face on the win...

... but as has been said... congrats!  well played!

well played and well cashed in!

Pure speculations says the guy had some family members cash in with the win so he didnt have to pay gift taxes when they came knockin at his door. Again ...pure speculation.

I appreciate Powerball's new 2nd Place winner prize amount! I always play Powerball with the "Powerplay" option so that the 2nd Place winner prize amount doubles to $2M.

Congratulations to this lucky winner(s) [maybe they gave/split % some of the tickets to friends or family members]!Hyper

My specualtion on the (3) trips is that he already had "camp" set up and only wanted to get things started with the first cash in...and maybe needed some money to pay his lawyers for services regarding his plan. Remember, no time frame is specified here...so there is probably a reasonable lapse between the cash-in's. Common sense tells me he wanted to make sure he had somewhere secure to put the money.

In my honest opinion, and based on his actions, he definitely had a plan in place. Very smart and prepared guy. He won all the way around.

I usually only play one ticket with one line of my pick and one QP.  So getting multiple winning tickets is not in the cards for me.  I like to stay within my budget for the month but maybe I will splurge if the powerball gets high or mega gets high again.  It might be my time to hit you never know.  Any ways congrats to the lucky winner and his big win.-weshar75

Weshar75, this sounds like a good plan. Do you buy with additional "Powerplay" and "Megaplier" option?

Sounds like he/she played the same five numbers and picked a different powerball

number on each ticket , I've seen this strategy being talked about on the forum.

This player had no doubt about the first 5 numbers thats for sure, those numbers were important.

I wonder how close he has come in the past of doing the same thing playing that way.  Now that it has been done more than once with PB, I'm  starting to think there something some players are seeing in the drawings that's missed by most.

Some 5 ball formula/strategy where the only unknown is the powerball number and that's given that it is pulled from its own pool of numbers.

Nice catch!

Didn't know that any state allow secondary prizes to be cashed anonymously and if he had a plan to collect multiple times, it wasn't thought out very well. Now that PB is a $2 ticket, using Powerplay doesn't double the price and all the secondary prizes are at the least doubled. In my state with Powerplay, matching 4 + 1 pays $40,000 so the same play would lose $100,000.

I guess if someone pointed out to me I should have won $2 million more betting the same amount, I'd want to remain anonymous too.

1:5.1m makes no sense to play for $3 on 1 line if NY SweetMillion is 1:3.8m/$3 = 1.26m - $1m. Also, 2nd prize of $40k could be had with Take5 for $3-3lines.  Also, PB's 3rd prize remained $10k for $2 as before w/PP x2-x4.

I guess if he had hung up with a smart crowd like us winners at LP, he could have been $2M richer.

The winner wanted to cover more powerball #'s clearly. I would do the same. I'd rather spend 12 dollars and get six different powerball #'s then just 4. Think about it. Nobody really expects to match 5 anyways.

I Agree!  And had he had the winning PB, he would have five $1M tickets to give to family members if he wanted to share without the worry of paying their taxes.

I wonder if this was the first time multiple second tier prizes were won in a major lottery game?

This lucky individual had a 1 in 6 chance of hitting the PB once he matched the first 5 numbers...would have been nice had he hit the jackpot and had 5 second place prizes to give away.

It was done recently in WVA too, but they had 7 tickets with Powerplay. Buying the same combination multiple times is probably done more than we think, but we'll only hear about the big winners. Matching the bonus number 100 times wouldn't make the news.

With millions of PB and MM players and the number of yearly jackpots won, how can anyone expect to win either game once?

I'm sticking to my story; the reason the guy wanted to be anonymous is because all six tickets had the same five numbers and the same bonus number.

Fascinating... I had simply thought that the winner had purchased the same ticket multiple times not changing the PB number.

Why don't you read back and figure out what someone is talking about before trying in be a smart azz and end up looking like a dumb azz.

Another member mentioned, "why spend $12.00 on 6 tickets(6 million)vs $12.00 on 4 tickets w/power play(8 million)?"

Whomever won clearly wanted to cover more power ball #'s so they have a better chance at winning the jackpot. Had he really believed he had the winning first 5 numbers.. Then yeah he would of bought all the powerball numbers.

But nobody is that confident and nobody wants to spend all that money on one set of numbers. Obviously.

ok I understand that this post is for me... ok... so to you I look dumb.  gotcha.  why again?  and the other member you mention is ALSO me... so are you saying that I am dumb because of my first post (that you didn't realize was me) or my second post? I am supposing you mean the one where I was saying that I had thought the person might have used the same PB#.

as far as the 'clearly' part... not so much... and the nobody is that confident part?  well i would have to dis-concur with that as well.  again 'obviously'?  not so much

I noticed you made the above post 2 minutes after you quoted the wrong poster.  You had the option for 10 minutes or so after you make that post to edit or delete it.  You could have deleted it and started over and probably you would have been the only one to know about it.

I think it is possible to buy two identitical tickets by accident and I did it today.  I will filling out the slip and the store was busy and thought I changed one of the numbers (in the set of 5). When I looked at the PB ticket later, I had two sets of the same numbers.
