I would, unless it required a wait period to the fullest extent of the permitted time period without any guarantee the law will pass.

I'm not trying to do a "Bill Clinton" here, but it depends on what PENDING means! Only then can I make an informed decision in this regard.

Great question though.

I agree! I have not read the language of these proposed bills, but are they typically retroactive("grandfathered") in terms of application?...i.e. if the bill passes tomorrow, does it apply to anyone who wins the lottery from that day forward or does it include people who have already won and not claimed it yet.

That would be too tempting for politicians to appropriate in an "emergency".

And don't assume that it hasn't crossed their minds already.

Or that contingencies haven't already been made.

In my state the temp. anonymous bill is waiting on the govener's desk, so I'd wait a short time.

Otherwise this would take the patience of a saint,

and I hate my job situation.

Of course I'd have to find out if the new law applied to me retroactively before I start that wait.

I voted yes and that would be baring any unforeseen circulstances, but i can see some Twilight Zone type scenarios in this one.

JP winner attempted to wait a year, vanishes, no one know where the ticket is (they don't have it with them). That or an accident or a coma or something. Yikes!

A few years ago there was a woman in some state that hit the state lotto in the summer and kept the ticket until Christmas, gave it to her husband in a card and said, "Sorry, that's is the best I could do this year."

Now that's patience.

I worked for a shift boss who became 100% vested in profit sharing and once he did he kept talking about how tempting it would be to just walk off some night knowing he had a check for $333,333.33 coming. One night he did just that.

PS,

After he did they re-wrote it so no one could get that much from it again.

PPS,

In only a few years he blew most of it playing Keno and was working as a floorman in another joint. Another "Vegas success stoty."

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

Assuming that you would stipulate the wait would be only 6 months to find out if the law passed in states where you only have 6 months to claim the JP, and the wait would in no way jeopardize the claim, I would. And in the meantime that would give me a few months to rent a cheap apartment in another state and start a name change just in case. It seems like most of these are passing, so the name change probably wouldn't be necessary but I like to have all my bases covered.

Coin toss, sounds like the shift boss ruined it for everyone else,

were they happy to hear he burned through the cash and had to get another job ?

Would not wait for a year as claims have to be filed within 6 months of draw date. But I might be willing to stall a couple months....
