Massachusetts Lottery

A Massachusetts couple has won $1 million on a scratch-off lottery ticket they dug out of the trash after inadvertently throwing it away.

The state lottery commission says Joseph and Joanne Zagami of North Attleborough bought the $5 ticket from a vending machine while grocery shopping.

They stuck the ticket in a bag and forgot about it.

The next day, Joseph Zagami asked his wife if she had scratched the ticket. She hadn't. They dug through the trash and found it.

The couple claimed their prize Wednesday, opting for the one-time lump sum payment of $650,000 before taxes and $455,000 after. They plan to pay off their mortgage and other bills and take a vacation.

To get the full amount they would have needed to claim the prize over 20 years.

I thought this story was gonna be another one of those "I found a scratched lottery ticket in a convenience store trashcan & it was worth a million dollars" stories and ten or twelve other people claimed they threw it away by mistake and are sueing to get it back.

Looks like the lucky couple deserve a BIG CONGRATULATIONS for winning a million dollars, though.CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Quite so.
It seems Dumpster diving is alive and well, and paying off handsomely.
Congrats.

I could make up a waaaaaay better story than they did.

I mean that was pure boilerplate stuff.

I think my tale would begin in the outhouse out back and would involve a vicious badger living under the outhouse seat who balances himself on the edge of the abyss while snapping at anything that might be hanging through the hole into his abode. It's a man's worst nightmare. Well... it's certainly my worst nightmare.

And also a Raven who lives in the upper recesses of the privy who likes to steal paper. Whether toilet paper, newspaper, loose leaf, it makes no difference to him. He just grabs any paper he sees and flies away with it to God knows where and comes back without it.

How the lives of these two interlopers intertwine with mine to bring about the loss of my jackpot winning ticket and weave the miraculous chain of events leading up to it's return and resultant death-defying car chase to the Lottery Office with only seconds to spare will leave the Lottery Officials, the Media and legions of lottery afficionados spellbound, shaken to the very core of their beings, devoid of the will to reason and quite frankly, exhausted.

It may well be the best b*llsh*t "lost my lottery ticket" story ever told.

that's exactly what I was thinking.  Really blows the ticket says $1 million but after taxes it's less than half of that.  but hey, it's more than what they had before they scratched the ticket!

No doubt the trash is where most of the unclaimed lottery prizes ended up.

guess these people aren't concerned about anonominity like most  are. pretty much a non-story unless the trash was brought out to the curb and they had to dig through the landfill to find it. then it would be a story. all these aaron hernandez neighbors did was call attention to themselves and now will be hounded by the masses till the end of time. oh, wait a minute they only won 455,000 hardly worth worrying about having it known that they won.

Shifty Have you ever thought about some of those stories are really too weird to be true ,but guess congrat is in order no matter what!Banana

Well again and again they keep on reminding the players to check the tickets and of course keep them. Lucky that they were still able to find their ticket. I think now they will be more careful with the tickets that they are going to purchase.
