oops meant to rate this as a 5 but made a mistake and gave it a 4. I need to reread that book. I think I would have a different take than as a 17 year old. I recall the main character doing his morning exercises in front of a big TV that could see him also. That always stayed with me.

Excellent post, Buy Low. Love the line about "There was a whole tribe of men who made their living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets."

Some of that tribe are often mentioned and idolized here on LP.

Most interesting since the book was written in 1948, before any current legalized lottery.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

It was during the Han Dynasty in China between 205 and 187 BC that what could be called the first lottery was ever recorded. This lottery was in the form of Keno notes which would be distributed and the winner receiving a small prize. The government started this lottery in order to help fund government projects, such as the Great Wall of China.

In Europe it was during the Roman Empire that lotteries began cropping up. At this time lotteries were given in the way of dinner parties and every guest would be handed a slip of paper at some point throughout the party. At the end of the evening, every guest would go home with something. This wasn’t so much a lottery as it was the rich people wanting to show how much money they had. These could however, be considered to be some of the very first door prizes!

However, it was in 1434 that the first actual public lotteries were held and recorded for the history books. It was in areas of the Low Countries such as Flanders, Belgium, Holland and France that citizens would purchase tickets in the hopes that they would win and receive a cash award. These lotteries were used by the government to help fortify the towns as well as to help the poor. It was the Dutch that originally created the system of calculating the amount of prize money given by the odds of winning and assigned a certain number of tickets to be ‘winners.’

I've been trying to reread certain books I read as a young man. Not long ago I read The Jungle again, made me think meat processing is much cleaner now, but not sure the meat is. I also read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, both were still good reads, made me read other Twain works I hadn't read before. There's a long list of books I still need to visit again, but there's one I won't...because I'm sure Catcher in the Rye still sucks.

Yes, although the book was written in 1948 it is uncanny how we are really living 1984 right now......

They read everything, listen to and record everything and some local police forces now even have scanners that can look right thru the walls of your house. Freedom indeed!! SSshhhhh!!

I must admit that I have never read 1984. It is on my list of books to read.

But, back in the mid 80's I bought the soundtrack to it by VanHalen and still listen to it to this day.

Jump is one of my all time favorite songs.
