The Minnesota and Iowa state lotteries have unveiled a new two-state game in which players win the prize by matching all of the numbers — or none of them.

In the new game, called All or Nothing, players choose 12 numbers from a pool of 24.  There are 10 different ways to win prizes by matching various numbers, but the top prize of $100,000 is won by matching either all the numbers drawn or none of them.

Tickets cost $1 each, and drawings are held twice a day, at 12:45 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Central Time.

The game concept has been growing in popularity in recent years, and is currently used in the states of Illinois and Texas, as well as in Ireland.

Minnesota State Lottery Director Ed van Petten says the two-state effort is a novel concept.  He says the bigger population base makes the game work better.

All or Nothing game logo"It's the first game that's been developed based on customer comments," Van Patten said.

His Iowa counterpart, Terry Rich, says it's a game for people who never match anything in lottery drawings.

"We're real excited," said Rich. "We're real proud to partner with the Minnesota Lottery."

The Minnesota Lottery stated in a recent press release that All or Nothing uses "a player complaint about lotto drawings as the basis for a new game."  Some lottery insiders might interpret that as pointing the finger at computerized drawings, which currently dominate the Minnesota game lineup.

The new All or Nothing game drawings will be conducted by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), the same organization that operates the popular Powerball game.  Real mechanical lottery drawing equipment will be used for the drawings.

The All or Nothing drawings are twice a day, seven days a week at 12:45 p.m. and 8:45 p.m Central Time.  The odds of winning the top prize of $100,000 are 1 in 2.7 million.  The overall odds of winning any prize is 1 in 4.54.

To make way for the new game, the Iowa Lottery has retired the $100,000 Cash Game.  The final drawing was conducted on Saturday.

The winning numbers for All or Nothing will appear minutes after each drawing on Lottery Post's Iowa Lottery Results and Minnesota Lottery Results pages, as well as on Lottery Post's Multi-State Lottery Results page.  A Payouts link next to the drawing results is available in order to view all of the different prizes that can be won by matching various numbers.

These types of games are not as easy as they appear. Just another game to separate us from our money.

Well....only $1 a tic. Jackpot is only $100000. Texas is $2 a tic, but the jackpot is $250000.

I watch this game and have some pet numbers I watch, but I rarely play it anymore.

I wish they'd bring this All or Nothing game to California. Our draw games are so stale. Unhappy

They can axe the awful Daily Derby and put this in its place.(or course it would be pari-mutuel AoN)

This games stinks.

The Illinois version is called Hit or Miss and it's a $2 ticket with 4 drawings a day.

The most common result is you have 5, 6, or 7 hits which pays nothing, but on the bsck of the playslip it makes it look like everything pays, they omit 5, 6, or 7 hits in the pay chart.

To make it simple, I track it with a make believe ticket of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 19, 20, 21 2, 23, 24.

(You can use any set of 12 numbers and track it and get the same results.)

Most days playing every drawing the result would have been - $8.

One time it was + $2 and real or on paper I never saw a bigger win that that.

This is a lottery equivalent of poker players getting inexperienced people to play Lo-ball - "Oh, I'll play, I always get bad cards"- so then they go into a pot with a pair of Kings.

I was curious why someone would play this new game with horrible odds if they lived in Iowa and could play Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game which was a daily game and top prize odds were about 6 times better. So I went to Iowa lottery website and saw to my disbelief that they stopped offering Cash 5 in Jan 25, 2014.  Below were the odds of the discontinued Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game. Chair I hope Iowa people reject the new game or else other states follow suit and discontinue their Cash 5 type games in favor of games with much greater odds against the players.

Oops. My bad. I didn't read the whole article that you provided for us. I also hope that this trend of dropping Cash 5 type games will not catch on. Some of us hope to win a jp in this lifetime.

Not sure why Iowa cancelled their Cash 5 game. Are they downsizing or the lottery is disfavored there?

In TX, IL and MN the All or Nothing type game was in addition to their Cash 5 and other existing lotto games.

As for why someone would play, to me it's kind of like a Scratch game payouts in an online game: You get better overall odds of 1 in 4.5 and total payout of 60% which is better than most lotto games. And it has a lot more prize tiers, 12, compared to typically 3 or 4 like lotto games.(except JP games with 9) It's the combination of odds, prize structure and overall return that has to be considered.

Top prize odds are harder than cash 5, but better than lotto, so it really fits in the middle of those two. Actually it is closer to some scratch games top prize odds. But you'll get better typical return with AoN than either of those on your way to chasing the jackpot.

I'm sure if the game was generating healthy profits it would still be intact.  Lotteries are in the business of running popular games in order to generate profits for the state.  If a game is not popular, it will likely be canceled.

When I say that a game must generate profits, I am not saying the game is so awarding too much in prizes.  All games are meticulously designed so that the prizes will not bankrupt the game or the lottery.  I am saying that the game must be popular, and that it sells enough tickets each drawing to justify its existence.

Perhaps the Iowa Lottery could have redesigned their Cash 5 game to generate more sales.  That would be my personal approach, because I believe a Pick 5 game should be available in every state.  But I am not privy to the inner workings of the Iowa Lottery, and maybe there was a good reason to cancel the game.

News reports from Minnesota indicate that already on the first day (Tuesday) 7 people won the $1,000 second prize, and the game paid out 90 percent of its sales for that day.  Not bad for players!

Played a total of $15.00, only down $6.00; not too bad.

Maybe play a little more after a few more drawings.

Need to see the number patterns for a bit.
