Massachusetts Lottery

Ryan McNulty of Marshfield, Massachusetts, turned 21 and celebrated a day later by claiming a $1 million prize in the state lottery's "Billion Dollar Bonanza" instant game.

McNulty chose to collect in annual payments of $50,000 (before taxes) over 20 years. He told lottery officials he will use the money to buy a new car and pay some bills.

His lucky ticket was purchased at Green Harbor General Store, 40 Marginal Street in the Green Harbor section of Marshfield. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus on the sale of the $20 ticket.

The odds of winning a $1 million in the game are estimated at one in 436,000.

There are three (3) $10 million prizes and forty-eight (48) $1 million prizes remaining in the Billion Dollar Bonanza game.

yes it is, he's young enough to make mistake and learn from it by taking it annually...Congrats to the lucky young fella

Congratulations and happy birthday!!

Whatever you do, don't fall for one of those JG Wentworth scams where they buy your annuity for pennies on the dollar.

I think this is the first time I have heard of someone that young winning a major prize on the lottery.

^The majority of the people who play are middle-aged or elderly. However, I have plenty of co-workers aged 18-28 who play regularly;and have seen people my age play when I stop at the gas station. I've also seen quite a few young winners in the past year in scratch off games and state lotteries. We like money as much as anyone else, lol.

Where i live i see a array from YOUNG ADULTS 18-25 to older young adults 30s/40s.

and old seniors each day!

so many youngins, i know play it from 18 y.o. early 20s. to late 20s, late 30s.and forties,to 80!

so i think it is really just all about luck,so great job to this young man,i know he is a very happy camper

even after taxes...so nice to see this, however i would take 1 lump sum at ANY AGE,premise on life is so short,

anything can go wrong, then he has to "wait"for it to come in the following year.I wish him so much luck god speed to him.Banana

adios!

Morgothaod, if this lottery winner isn't renting or owning a home, that would be himself.  Jester Laugh

I agree! Maybe he could win again within the next 20 and just perpetuate the collect. Luck to you all!

Yep, plus it should help discourage the moochers who'd have dollar signs in their eyes if he had $600K or so after taxes.

Why don't you give all your paychecks to the homeless? (If you even have a job).

Would YOU give all your money to the homeless if you won a million dollars?

Didn't think so.

By him taking the annual payments it's a great way for him to budget... It also forces him to manage money, so he doesn't make impulsive mistakes.  Good for him.

I'll be honest, I'm surprised the "cash is king" proponents haven't come in to harangue Mr. McNulty for not taking the lump sum.  I guess we can agree, then, that there are some scenarios where the annuity is the right choice; winning when you're really young is one of those instances.

What a great win for this young man! Congrats!

It feels great to win, but I just do not like instant scratch off games. Spending $20 for a scratch off game is not my thing.

morgothaod's avatarmorgothaod

Of course I would give a million to the homeless.  Don't be ridicalous

One-Day

NOT a very smart move.  He'll receive maybe two payments before the communists come and donate all his money to the revolution.  Dangerous times, Ryan, very dangerous.

Congratulation to Ryan McNulty, nice way to celebrate your 21 birthday, just enjoy it. Just think of it as Massachusetts Lottery, giving you a gift that keep coming for the next 20 years.

Congratulations and Happy Birthday Mr. McNulty. Good choice on choosing the annuity. Now run out and go get yourself, a couple of nice shirts and ties, and remember not to wear them with sweatpants.

ASja2002

I'm fairly sure at the time this game started (2008) There wasn't a lump sum option on grand prize wins (Outside MM or PB) That would change very soon. But since the game didn't have the option in it's rules, he automatically gets the 20-year payoff. Good for him nonetheless

Darn. Every single year around my birthday the jackpots are HUGE...every single year. Always hoping for a birthday miracle like this one but nada...yet : ))

Congrats to you man and way to go with the annuity choice. Best decision ever!!!

Louisiana started its first lottery game in 1991 and I was playing it at age 23. All these years later, I still play, haven't hit the big one yet, but hope to someday.
