The Titanic lifeboat recovered by crewmembers from RMS Oceanic (Henry Aldridge & Son).
Photos and a handwritten note detailing the grisly discovery of Titanic’s last lifeboat will be auctioned in the U.K. later this week.
The three photos were taken on May 13, 1912, almost a month after Titanic’s sinking, and show crewmembers from RMS Oceanic attempting to recover one of the doomed liner’s lifeboats. Inside the lifeboat, thought to be the last to leave the sinking ship, were the decomposing bodies of three Titanic passengers.
One photo shows a boat from Oceanic being lowered, another shows the boat approaching the drifting lifeboat. A third picture shows Oceanic crew members on the Titanic lifeboat.
Titanic struck an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. ship's time on April 14 1912 and sank just over two hours later with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.

A handwritten account of the lifeboat recovery by an unidentified Oceanic passenger describes the gruesome discovery of three corpses. One corpse was wearing a dinner jacket and the bodies of two Titanic firemen were wedged under the lifeboat’s seats, it explained, adding that one corpse’s arms came off in the hands of the Oceanic’s boarding officer. A woman’s ring was also found on the lifeboat, according to the note.
“It’s an incredibly graphic account of the recovery,” Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneer Andrew Aldridge told FoxNews.com. “Titanic was ‘the ship of dreams’ but this is the ship of nightmares – it’s the horrific elements of what happens in a disaster
A number of Titanic passengers made it to the lifeboat, known as ‘Collapsible A’ when it washed off the ship’s deck, partly submerged, but not all survived. The bodies found by Oceanic were left on the lifeboat when Collapsible A’s survivors were picked by another lifeboat.
The corpse in the dinner jacket was identified as Titanic first class passenger Thomson Beattie. The wedding ring belonged to Swedish passenger Elin Gerda Lindell, who briefly reached Collapsible A, but later drowned, Her husband Edvard Bengtsson Lindell held Elin’s ring before he died on Collapsible A. His body was never recovered.

In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Heroic Titanic seaman gets grave stone 75 yrs after death

A seaman whose quick actions aboard a lifeboat are credited with saving passengers during the Titanic's sinking will finally receive a headstone on his grave, nearly 75 years after his death.Titanic enthusiasts from around the world are expected to join members of Robert Hopkins' family at Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Saturday as a black granite headstone bearing his name is unveiled and blessed.
Hopkins' body has rested in the unmarked grave since his death in 1943. His act of heroism on the night of April 14, 1912, has been long forgotten, except for those who closely study the Titanic's ill-fated maiden voyage in which 1,512 of the 2,225 passengers and crew died when the ship sank in the icy North Atlantic Ocean.
The able seaman was asleep in his bunk when Titanic hit an iceberg. He was assigned to help load and launch lifeboats, which could only handle 1,178 people. First Officer William Murdoch, who was on the wheelhouse when the collision occurred, ordered Hopkins to board Lifeboat 13, which was carrying many third-class passengers, said Titanic International Society co-founder and president Charles Haas.
Hopkins' boat was lowered below Lifeboat 15, which was descending. It looked as though Lifeboat 15 would land on top of Hopkins' boat.
"Hopkins, from what we've seen, called up and told them to stop lowering. He and another crew member went to work with a pen knife to cut the ropes," Haas said. "If Hopkins had not done what he did, 13 and potentially 15, would have been lost."

After his rescue, Hopkins returned to sea and later became a longshoreman in Hoboken, across the Hudson River from the pier in lower Manhattan where Titanic was supposed to have docked, according to the Titanic International Society.
When the society decided to hold this year's annual convention in Newark, it made arrangements to visit Holy Name Cemetery, where Hopkins and four other survivors —including two who were aboard Lifeboat 13 — are buried. The group mentioned that the grave of the native of Belfast was unmarked.
"When I realized one was unmarked, I immediately offered to provide a headstone at no cost, with permission from Newark Archbishop John Myers," said Andrew P. Schafer, executive director of Catholic Cemeteries.
The Titanic group tracked down Hopkins' four grandchildren, who had known as youngsters that their grandfather was a Titanic survivor.
"My father told me his father did not talk much about it," said his granddaughter, Virginia Hopkins.
The Brooklyn, New York, resident will be joined by her three brothers, their children and other relatives when the headstone is unveiled.
"It's a great honor," she said.

Without a doubt the most famous passenger ship of all time, the RMS Titanic has inspired dozens of movies, documentaries, and television stories. It was a study in contrasts — a lavish floating hotel for first-class passengers and a restrictive yet inexpensive mode of reaching America for emigrants. Its passenger list juxtaposed some of the richest, most powerful people in the world with the teeming poor in steerage. Titanic’s collision with an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and its loss of nearly two-thirds of the people onboard was a tragedy that placed it in the realm of legend.
Hindsight shows that an *inadequate number of lifeboats was only one of a number of questionable practices leading to more than 1,500 deaths, including the drowning of John Jacob Astor — then the world’s richest man. Statistics regarding the ship, its crew and passengers vary from one resource to another. We’ve done our best to provide a clear and wide-ranging picture of the of the Titanic and its fateful maiden voyage.
Note Bene:
*Often the one thing that is usually overlooked, based on weight capacity of the lifeboats, there were was questionable quantity of boats and places to go around. There load rating was based on the number of Royal Marines they could hold. But you can't lock passengers and crew below decks, load the boats sloppily, and then launch them half full to successfully evacuate.
