By Todd Northrop

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — A New Jersey man has won a multi-state Cash4Life prize worth $1 million because of a lottery ticket that was sold to him accidentally.

New Jersey Lottery officials reported the second-prize winning Cash4Life ticket was sold at Sam's Day & Nite Food Store, 1200 River Ave., and matched five numbers but not the Cash Ball in the Dec. 1 drawing. The winning numbers were were 17, 23, 30, 49 and 55. The Cash Ball drawn was 1, according to lottery officials.

The store owners said the man, 70-year-old Dante Castillo, won $1,000 a week for life, but his wife decided to claim the $1 million cash option. The convenience store will receive a $10,000 bonus check from lottery officials for selling the winning ticket.

Castillo generally picks his own numbers, but the clerk accidentally sold him one Quick Pick ticket — which turned out to be the winner. The couple claimed their winnings the next day at lottery headquarters in Lawrenceville.

Castillo told lottery officials he knew he won after checking the ticket but returned to the store to double check. He and his wife then drove to the lottery offices.

The odds of buying a second-prize ticket with a $2 ticket are 7,282,016 to 1, according to lottery officials. Drawings in the game, played in eight states including New Jersey, are held every Monday and Thursday.

In addition to New Jersey, Cash4Life also is played in Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.

I heard about this one yesterday.  THe clerk was supposed to give him a different ticket.  Yet the customer won that money.

Win win for both.  Wow.

Gee, gosh darn I wish I was that lucky.
I don't even come close, at all.

And, I've never been one of these 'mistake winners', in anything.

I'd claim the next day also, and probabably get there faster even though he's closer to HQ

According to Google maps he's 69 minutes...and I'm 88 minutes from there...difference is I would not return to the store.

Lucky fellow.  Now how many LP members will buy a ticket someone else didn't want?  I have on occasion hoping that it was the winner.

I always forget asking for mistake tickets but seeing how I almost always play online because of snotty clerks who give you the ol' up and down, there's virtually no chance of getting one in the first place.

I was on vacation once in Ireland and (like in NYC I guess) 1 quick pick is actually 2 lines, so when I asked for 2 quick picks I got 4 lines, not too expensive,  so I said oh well I'll take it anyway and the clerk more or less REFUSED to sell me my own mistake ticket. I couldn't convince him that those 4$ weren't too bad. Maybe he wanted to win off of my mistake ticket.

Anyway at least that ticket didn't win the jackpot, not sure if it won anything else. Another reason to play online.

Can you play on-line in Deutschland???  Hope so.  It can be addicting!

Me either.  Reminds me of a story from my late Mum.  A clerk in WA sold a ticket and the customer was being a d--k and didn't want it.  She had to buy it and won $7 million if memory serves me correctly.

Yes, it's available country wide. Every one with a residence and of legal age can play online with his or her state lottery via their website or using one of 23 licensed brokers.

It's great because you don't have to wait in line or leave the house when you don't want to, and some brokers have lower processing fees than the state agency websites themselves.

I prefer playing only as store clerks sometimes act annoyed by having to print just one line.

I thought you guys would be able to do this.  I don't like that you have processing fees though.  It is free in Kentucky.  I just won $10 on a Ft Knox on-line scratcher!

Yeah, the processing fee is one thing I really dislike. Unfortunately here you can't get away from them, but online you can get the lowest available one, which is 0,16€.

Would you volunteer 16 cents per playslip in exchange for tax free winnings though? Wink

Congrats on the win, though personally I don't play online scratchers unless I get them free in a promotion, I just don't trust them and I think they are so readliy available that one can really dig too deep.

I would give my right arm for tax-free winnings!!

California does not tax lottery products and it feels good.

Yes, I would have 16 cents added to the cost if it would give me tax free winnings.  Your government still gets a bite of the action and not greedy like our country is.  Too bad we don't--and IMO never will a flat tax.

Is MSTW still in effect in Deutschland, value added tax if I remember correctly?  I do remember service members could fill out a form to avoid paying it.

Well nobody even won $1 million on Powerball last night, so on we go.

MaximumMillions

Yes, Mehrwertsteuer is still a thing on most items. The nice thing is it's always already factored into the price and if you had to checkout there are no surprises as it's the same everywhere.

I didn't know service members could get a rebate as sales taxes are levied in the states, I thought one could only get back what is not charged in one's home country. I have never bothered with tax refunds on vacation, never bought enough to be worth the hassle.

I told My Son (he picks up my Tickets for me now) always BUY MISTAKE Tickets just In case, You never know.

If the clerk wouldn't give you the printed out Ticket You asked for even though It was a MISTAKE TICKET, Tell them to sell It too You or Cancel It right In front of You and show you the Cancellation slip or MAKE them get the Manager If you want that ticket they can't keep you from buying It!

Maybe I'm just a BIG Biatch but you have to stand up for yourself no one else will?

That's a Rip, why is his CASH only $1Mill, because he's 70? He could still easily live another 20-30yrs! My Grandpa was 98 when he passed away!
