Keno-style game will have drawings every five minutes

TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey Lottery announced that it will soon be adding a new style of lottery play to its product lineup with Quick Draw, a game with drawings held every five minutes. Winning numbers are displayed on a television screen installed in retail locations where tickets are sold.

Quick Draw will most commonly be played in social settings such as bars, restaurants, bowling alleys, etc., where players stay for a period of time to socialize, dine and meet with friends.

"It has been a long-standing and much anticipated goal of the Lottery to offer this new and exciting game to the public," said Carole Hedinger, New Jersey Lottery's Executive Director. "It will attract new participants and generate greater opportunities for the people of New Jersey. Currently, 18 other lotteries offer this style of game, with North Carolina also announcing similar plans last month."

Today, the Lottery Commission was presented with modified game rules reflecting the changes necessary to make the rules compliant with today's business technology and practices. The Lottery Commission initially approved Quick Draw game rules in 2005, in anticipation of this offering.

The anticipated launch date in New Jersey is August 2017. The game will initially be rolled out at approximately 200 Lottery locations that meet the appropriate retail classification as noted above with additional retailers to be identified in the months ahead.

Quick Draw is projected to increase Lottery net proceeds by approximately $20 million. That anticipated revenue is included in the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget proposal.

About Quick Draw

Quick Draw is a game of chance that provides players with a field of 80 numbers from which to choose up to 10 numbers. The Lottery draws 20 numbers and, depending on how many numbers players match, they win a prize. Drawings are held every five minutes and the winning numbers are displayed on television screens in the retail locations. Quick Draw is typically played in locations at which large numbers of people congregate socially such as bars, restaurants and bowling alleys.

Interesting idea but if the draw numbers are electronically generated then the game WILL be tampered with. Either by the Lottery Commission itself, a rogue lottery employee or an outside hacker. If the draw is manually conducted as are the normal daily draws, then the game has a chance to be on the up and up.

There is no reasonable way to do a lottery ball drawing every five minutes.  Quick-Draw Keno games are one of the exceptions in which a computerized drawing makes sense.  Another is raffle games, many of which have thousands of winning numbers.

Understood about the risks of a computerized drawing, but the only other possibility is not having the game at all.

The casinos that still have live ball Keno drawings do not have set time limits between, but many of them have a second Keno game that is either 5 or 4 minutes between drawing and use a RNG similar to what state lotteries use.

As for risks, Keno probably has the lowest profit of any casino game and probably ranks at the bottom of lottery games too. It just makes no sense for either to cheat players.

You cannot compare a casino to an entire state lottery.  At a casino the thing can break down and the people in the casino might be upset, but it's really not a huge deal.  State lotteries have to make their drawings go off literally like clockwork, and it has to work perfectly every time.  Of course problems occur, and we've all seen videos of errors with drawings, but they are relatively rare, and when they occur they affect the entire state.

I'm not sure what you mean by "cheat players".  If lottery employees attempted to cheat players they would be thrown in jail.  Have you been following the Eddie Tipton scandal?

Casinos have the only Keno games with live ball drawings, but some use an RNG and some use both. I agree it would be very difficult at best for any state lottery with 4 or 5 minute Keno games to use live ball drawings. The point I was trying to make about cheating players, because Keno is the least played casino game, it would be very stupid for casino owners to risk their gaming licenses to steal a couple thousand from players. The people claiming their state lottery is "cheating the players" don't understand the math and why it makes no sense for a billion dollar business to cheat a few players out of a couple bucks.

My question about the Tipton affair, if it's a fact he actually programmed the RNG to draw a set of numbers and then "self destruct" the program, why is MUSL still using the same or similar RNG?

My understanding is that they no longer use the drawing system created by Tipton.  I question why they continue to use computerized drawings at all at this point, but at least they did change the system.  Hopefully players will keep pressure on MUSL to change all of its drawings back to real ball drawings.

(This is off-topic to the discussion about the new NJ Quick Draw game, but worthy to mention because of the computerized drawing angle.)

If the payout is lower than in casinos, the lottery organization is too expensive or the lottery makes a big profit on players. The usual? I don't see a lottery organize a daily French roulette spin with the same payout than a casino. How comes? :)

The top payouts are a lot lower than in casinos though some of the smaller payoffs like 2 out of 3 are better. The thing is, compared to scratch-offs the lottery Keno payoffs are much better.

We have the same computerized game in Delaware and it is ran just like slot games wherein the payouts are controlled by the lottery. I have not seen anywhere here where anyone has won more than $10,000. Not sure how many years now that we have had the game, but I just checked back thru 2017 to 2008  listings on the website showing "big" winners of all games and only found the 1 listing of the $10,000 win for Keno. People do win several thousand at times, but I don't trust the game as a "random" draw. They display these kind of winners in between the game draws. For example, I filled out 12 cards once with 10 numbers per card. I selected the numbers from the corners, the center and then in between spots and played them all at once. I didn't win anything on any of them. I believe that due to the speed and power of today's processors, it can calculate all bets each game and select the 20 numbers picked that will make sure big winners do not occur very often. I remember when Maryland started this game, maybe 15 years or so ago, their income really went up the next year. The Keno game is a "money maker" for all states. One has a better chance by taking the Keno money and buying instant tickets for games that have a big prize. There someone is guaranteed to win the $100,000 prize (or whatever) eventually.  The states have a system there also of putting winners in the stores with the biggest sales and they are not going to let anybody win the "big one" too soon when the game starts until they have sold a lot of lesser tickets. I don't buy those either.

I would say that if you are a NJ player, your best chance for winning at this game will be at the initial opening of the game as they will "relax" the computer to get people playing and you will be able to get some wins, but after they have got enough players "hooked" things will tighten up. Just my opinion.

20/40 with pick 1 to 10 or even up to 20 would have been nice. 20/80 with only pick 10? Every five minutes, just fast picking or qp? Will the results be displayed online? [Y]:=365d*24h*12g=105120;%*20years=2102400 lines in a db. How about a PB or MB or Pick3 every 5 minutes? No, Yes?

Equiners ... there is NO LONGER manual draws, that's why people have been losing so much of late as they play against a computerized program that pick the numbers with less players and/or not played at all to maximize profits.
