  These days, when somebody hits Powerball, Mega Millions, or some other US jackpot game, you almost expect the winner(s) to collect the jackpot prize in lump sum. However, (although Massachusetts DOES allow its Mega Millions winners to select the cash option) its Megabucks (6/42) and Mass Millions (6/49) winners still CANNOT collect their jackpot prize in lump sum. NOTE: As of today, Mass. Keno is drawn every four minutes instead of five. Perhaps change(s) to their   in-state jackpot games would be preferable.

  Saturday's Mass. 6/42 was hit by one ticket. If the top prize was hit in any other (except Mass. 6/49) US jackpot game, the player could have chosen a lump-sum payment. (Mass. winners in Mega Millions DO have a cash option, however.) Due to the quirky rules, the 6/42 "winner" is REQUIRED to receive 20 annual payments of about $223,000 each, minus withholdings. Mass.' new lottery director, Joseph Sullivan, needs to push for allowing ALL Mass. Lottery winners to collect       (non-lifetime) prizes in lump sum.

  Somebody voted to keep the 6/42 ANNUITY-ONLY, but allow 6/49 winners to choose lump sum (instead of changing _both_ games.)

  I'd like the know the reasoning behind that idea.

  I live in Massachusetts and have a season ticket
  
  for Megabucks. Whatever the reasoning 20 years ago,
  
  there's definitely no reason for denying winners
  
  the cash now, and they should change it. But this
  
  is Mass, where corruption, small-mindedness,
  
  incompetence and inertia rule, so I don't know
  
  what it would take to get a small change like
  
  that done.   
  
  
  
  To be honest, the Mass lottery *really* needs to do
  
  something to make both games more exciting and
  
  get a little publicity and fresh ticket sales.
  
  The Big Game has made the $5-10 million jackpots
  
  a little boring. Having a cash option should be
  
  the first thing they should do. They should also
  
  have a bonus number like Tri-State does to generate
  
  more winners - I haven't won a cent on my season
  
  ticket since March 1998. And they should increase
  
  the lower prizes by a lot more. I haven't seen
  
  any evidence that the new lottery director
  
  has made any changes at all. Guess they were all

  NY (my home) did the same thing with Quick Draw this year.

  Are you the one (you need to get on here more often!) whose subscription expires in February?

  Even if all three Mass. games (including MM) offered a cash option, there's too many jackpot games. The new director, IMO, should replace BOTH the 6/42 and 6/49 with, say, a 6/48 game with a CASH OPTION (duh...) and a $3 prize for matching 3/6, $125 for matching 4/6, and $4000 for matching 5/6. I would DROP the "bonus ball" to simplify the game. This game should be drawn Wednesdays and Saturdays.

  Also, I would OVERHAUL the Mass Cash game, and draw it at least 4x/week, if not daily. (The Connecticut and NY pick-5s are 7x/week.)

  As for "Tri-State", I would like to see Maine join MUSL, so they could sell "Hot Lotto" as well as Powerball.

  I understand that Mass. has a very low advertising budget, if at all. The NY Lottery is very aggressive about advertising; however, I don't buy tickets on impulse.

  If the games were stupid, they would have already extinguished it for good.

  The reason why they are around is because they are so so so so so GREAT!!!!
