WASHINGTON — Republican Rep. Aaron Schock of Illinois, dogged about irregularities in his campaign finance and congressional spending accounts, suddenly announced on Tuesday that he would resign his House seat at the end of the month.

“I do this with a heavy heart,” Schock said in a statement in which he said he had given the people of his Peoria-area district his all since his election in 2008.

“But the constant questions over the last six weeks have proven a great distraction that has made it too difficult for me to serve the people of the 18th District with the high standards that they deserve and which I have set for myself,” he said.

Schock has come under heavy scrutiny following revelations of lavish spending, payments to donors for flights on private jets and improperly categorized expenses.

On Monday, the AP confirmed that the Office of Congressional Ethics had reached out to Schock’s associates as it apparently began an investigation.

The office is an outside panel that reviews ethics complaints against House members and makes recommendations to the House Ethics Committee.

A person who received a letter from the panel said the OCE was interested in conducting an interview and reviewing any relevant documents.

At least two other Schock associates received similar letters, the person said. The Schock associate asked not to be identified because the ethics panel’s actions are confidential.

Schock’s political fall was swift. Just weeks ago, a report about his “Downton Abbey”-style office decor attracted attention about his spending.

The same thing that the repubs accused the Dems of doing is what brought down Aaron Schock. He misused taxpayer’s dollars to fund his glamorous life in full view of the leaderless repubs. With Schock's most recent expenditures not yet available to the public, USA Today dug through earlier Congressional expense reports and found, before giving his office the Downton treatment, the Illinois Republican had spent over $100,000 of taxpayer money on previous office renovations that included hardwood floors, granite countertops, and leather furniture. Again, where is the outrage repubs? Tea-party members where are you? You don't see anything wrong with this picture?

Schock is not experienced enough to have had legal talking points for his actions. He obviously did not have a defensive plan to cover his ass if his actions were borderline improper.

I agree with you, Speedy, and I can't believe that JAP69 attempted to vindicate this guy. What he's done is no different than what Jesse Jackson Jr./wife and Bob McDonnell/wife did. Instead of him doing what I'm doing with the COMPARE AND CONTRAST, he's trying to give him a pass. This is what's wrong with all these people...they can't call a duck a DUCK. "He needs more lessons in TAP DANCING?" Wow, buddy! Let me tell you what since that's your case. From this point on, when any Democrat is caught up in anything money, YOUR SAME REASONING WILL APPLY TO THEM AND I'M GONNA MAKE DA*NED CERTAIN OF IT. That post, like so many others, is saved.

SO, instead of facing the music, you're saying that HE SHOULD'VE BEEN ABLE TO LIE AND HIDE IT BETTER. Yeah, okay...we get it. Now, go brush your teeth and try to get all that toe jam from between your gums.
